DEU was founded on July, 20th 1982 by Higher Education Instututes Foundation Law no: 41 with the aim of training people in a wide range of diciplines like health, economy, art, engineering, etc. in order to contribute to the financial, technical and social development of our society.
DEU targets research as well as high quality and modern education.
Seventeen previously founded instutions of Ege University and other various higher education institutes were affiliated to the University at the same year.:
- Medicine, Law, Fine Arts, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering and Architecture Faculties, Judicial School, Aydın Tourism and Hotelry School, Marine Sciences and Technology Institute from Ege University;
- Buca Education, Denizli Engineering, Theology Faculties, Demirci Education, Denizli Education, İzmir Vocational Schools from Ministry of National Education and Youth and Sports;
- İzmir National Conservatory from Ministry of Culture and Tourism;
- Muğla Business School form Ankara Academy of Economics and Commerce.
With the foundation of Arts and Sciences Faculty, Instute of Social Scences, Instute of Health Sciences, Maritime Business and Management School, Education School and Art Education School, the total number of units reached to 24 at the same year.
The number of academic units reached to 41 in 1992.
Presently, DEU has 13 faculties, 5 schools, 6 vocational schools, 6 graduate schools, 5 institutes, 43 reasearch and application centers.
