Course Objective

Create mathematical foundations of probability and teach concepts of probability that make up the theoretical background of statistics. Learn about statistical concepts and informed about its application fields.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Iformation concerning the probability and statistics concepts
2   Ability to apply concepts to problems related to probability
3   Ability to categorize discrete and continuous distributions and to apply to problems
4   Ability to apply concepts and information acquired in real-life problems and to evaluate the results
5   Ability to apply statistical estimation techniques to solve problems (statistical hypothesis testing, confidence interval estimation)
6   Ability to explain the knowledge acquired and conclusions by correct use of language in a discipline.

1 Basic Probability Concepts-Counting Rules, Permutations, Circular Permutations, Repeated Permutations and Applications
2 Combination, Binomial Theorem, Repeated Combination and Applications, The Concept of Probability, Conditional Probability, Bayes Theorem and Applications
3 Random Variables, Expected Value and Variance of Discrete Random Variable, Expected Value and Variance of Continuous Random Variable
4 Two-dimentional Random Variables, Conditional Distributions, Expected Value and Variance, Covariance, Correlation Coefficient, Moments, Moment Generating Function
5 Some Discrete Distributions (Bernoulli, Binomial, Poisson, Geometric ), Some Continuous Distributions (Gamma, Exponential )
6 Normal Distribution, Standard Normal Distribution and Properties
7 Sample Selection, Data Editing and Applications, Descriptive Statistics
8 Midterm Exam
9 Sampling Theory and Applications, Statistical Estimation and Applications
10 Statistical Hypothesis Testing, Hypothesis Tests Related to Mass Average
11 Hypothesis Tests Related to Mass Variance
