Course Objective

The aim of this course is to define meaning and explain the processes of interpreting meaning as a mental phenomenon. The basic assumptions, tools and methods to the study of meaning are also given to the students. Certain issues in semantics are related to syntax, lexicon and pragmatics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding the foundations and basic approaches to the study of meaning
2   Provide an overview of various areas of semantics
3   Being familiar with the basic assumptions, tools and methods of the study of meaning
4   Being able to integrate their knowledge of semantics with knowledge of syntax
5   Being able to relate issues in semantics to lexicon and pragmatics
