Course Objective

Importance of the biodiversity in the Turkey s geography, major species of flora and fauna in the special ecosystems in Turkey, concepts of extinction, endangered, and threatened species, protection of natural sources; biodiversity, functional interpretation of biodiversity.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to use terminology related to nature and biodiversity.
2   Ability to ecologically sustainable use of environmental resources and Turkey s geographic structure in order to determine the objectives and strategies.
3   Ability to follow current problems in environmental and other areas and to interpret ecological needs.
4   Ability to work individually or in multidisciplinary teams on ecological problems and to provide effective communication about red list species.
5   Ability to indicate an opinion on problems encountered in the world and Turkey regarding coastal areas and their defined solution options.
6   Ability to effectively use information technologies at an advanced level toward solutions or to determine methods to access information.

1 Introduction natural richness and biodiversity terms
2 General concepts of man- nature interaction
3 Land and aquatic ecosystems; flora and fauna in all ecosystems and survival of species
4 Biological systems (survival of a species is dependent on the survival of its populations)
5 Environmental pollution; biologic accumulation and effects of environment
6 Concepts of nature conservation and protected area
7 Classification of protected areas (recreation, national park etc.)
8 Mid-term exam
9 Major protected areas in World and Turkey (recreation, national park etc.)
10 Functional interpretation of Biodiversity
11 International agreement between governments in the World (CITES, Bern etc.)
12 Introduced to concepts of extinction, endangered, and threatened species
13 Distribution of extinction, endangered, and threatened species in Turkey
14 Conservation of Turkey s natural richness
15 Final exam
