Course Objective

This course is designed to equip students of all departments with the necessary knowledge and skills about using computer assisted instruction in their classes. Therefore, students learn the basic concepts regarding the computer assisted instruction and the characteristics that a well coordinated computer assisted instruction must include. Students are allowed to prepare computer assisted materials. Students also acquire a positive attitude towards computer assisted instruction and learn how to choose, develop and apply the correct methods in their classes.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the basic concepts of computer assisted instruction
2   To be able to state the advantages and disadvantages of computer assisted instruction
3   To be able to state the computer assisted instruction methods
4   To be able to express the types the basic concepts of computer assisted instruction software
5   To be able to define the basic features of several computer assisted instruction methods and evaluate them
6   To be able to use one computer assisted instruction development software
7   To be able to develop one computer assisted instruction material
8   To be able to integrate various computer assisted instruction applications to the material they developed

Course Contents

1 Introduction of the course and syllabus
2 The basic concepts of computer assisted instruction (CAI) and theories
3 Advantages and disadvantages of CAI
4 Methods of computer assisted instruction (Laboratory method, PC in each class method, personal computer method, Web based instruction) and their features
5 Types of CAI software (Tutorials, Drill and Practice, Simulations, Problem solving and educational games), discussion on sample software
6 Starting a presentation software, menus, adding and deleting information, choosing a background, applying WordArt, adding footnote, date, time, page number, etc.
7 Effects, displaying and running the application, action buttons, adding audio, etc.
8 Midterm
9 Animation usage and its examples
10 Developing animation
11 Developing animation, Adding multimedia (audio, video, animation, etc)
12 Question and feedback pages, main menu and adding exit
13 Developing an instructional material I
14 Developing an instructional material II Presentation the instructional material that was developed and discussion about it.
15 Final
