General Description

History

The Program, which has started education with the title of School of Maritime Business and Management in the body of the Dokuz Eylül University as the first higher education program in Turkey concerning maritime business administration, aims to meet the qualified manpower requirements within the context of maritime related interests of Turkey and the philosophy of total quality management.
Department of Maritime Business Administration was founded in 1988. Graduates take part in the maritime industry effectively and have the opportunity to be employed internationally. The Department is responsible for performing scientific research in the related disciplines as well as providing the industry with training and consultation services. The fundamental aim is to provide the students with maritime ethics and values, critical and analytical thinking, self-discipline, self-confidence, social responsibility, team working, lifelong learning, managerial and leadership qualifications. With this respect employee involvement and improvement of the quality of work life are the basic principles.
The Program, including the evening shifts (classes), is carried out by the department of Maritime Business Administration at Tınaztepe Campus. The medium of instruction in both components of the Program is English language. Its curriculum covers such main fields as Business Administration, Law, Basic and Professional Maritime Studies, Maritime Business, Logistics and Transportation. TM-1 scores, received on the University Entrance Exam conducted by the Assessment, Selection and Placement Center (OSYM), is considered in enrollment for the Department. Therefore, those entitled to get enrolled to the program but lack English language competency are exposed to one-year intensive English Prep Program. In 2011-2012 academic year a joint B.Sc. diploma program with the Maine Maritime Academy of the U.S.A. was started.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The Regulations Concerning Transferring Between Associate Degree and Bachelors Degree Programs, Double Major and Minor Programs and The Interagency Credit Transfer and the Evaluation Terms and Conditions for parallel transfers determined by the University Senate are applied to students in Turkey and foreign countries, who wish to transfer from higher education Institutions to Dokuz Eylul University.
Regulations Concerning the Continuation of Graduates from Vocational Schools and Three-Year Open University Programs to Undergraduate Education are applied for graduates of vocational schools for continuation of their education in related undergraduate programs as vertical transfer.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to graduate, students must successfully complete all of the courses in the four-year program. This degree is given to students who have passed all the courses in the curriculum with a minimum of 240 ECTS credits and an overall grade point average of at least 2.00/4.00, successfully completed the two compulsory internships on Port Business and Maritime Business Management each of which last 20 days and the graduation project.

Profile of the Programme

The objectives of the Maritime Business Administration undergraduate program are to equip the graduates with the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to serve all areas of the maritime business management profession with the awareness of ethical values, internalized global contemporary visions and lifelong learning capabilities. The program also aims to carry out effective scientific researches and develop projects in maritime business discipline and related fields while offering consultations for stakeholders as well as for the whole society in such fields.
There is an education policy of both theoretical and practical-intensive courses where students are given Business Administration, Law, Basic and Professional Maritime Studies, Maritime Business, Logistics and Transportation courses. The assignment, project and laboratory studies in these courses help the transfer of theory into practical implementations.
The department where the Maritime Business Administration Undergraduate Program is conducted has two main fields named Maritime Transportation Business Administration and Maritime Economics and Policy. The department faculty members have publications enlisted in SSCI and other edited journals. The department has the capability to provide training and consulting services, and to develop projects to the maritime industries.
The department has constantly been developing for a more effective and modern education with its dynamic, expert staff in their fields, its education policy and its quality of incorporating worldwide changes to its education content and educational structure with regulations that are fit to the department characteristics.
Since 2010, BOLOGNA Process (European Higher Education Area alignment) has been started, enabling the citizens of the countries within the European Higher Education Area to benefit from the exclusive travelling facilities for higher education and working. Since 2011, Diploma Supplement is given to graduating students. The University has received the Diploma Supplement Label and studies are in progress for the ECTS label.
Through bilateral agreements with high-quality institutions of international reputation, the Department aims to increase the knowledge and experience, by supporting the exchange of students and academics. As of 2012, the Department has 8 bilateral agreements for ERASMUS Students and Scholars Exchange Program.
Education is given in the 6 classrooms and 4 laboratories including Port Operations, Logistics Computer and Business Simulations. There is also both wired and wireless network connection as well as a library available for all students and instructors in the department.
As of 2013, the teaching and research activities are maintained with a wide range of academic staff consisting of 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 7 assistant professors, 3 lecturers and 3 research assistants (http://www.deu.edu.tr/DEUWeb/English/Icerik/Icerik.php KOD=17571).

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of Department of Maritime Business Administration are employed in a wide range of positions in both private and public sectors. The graduates can acquire mid and top level positions in different fields of the private sector, such as shipowner/operators, ship management companies, transportation intermediaries (ship agents, ship brokers, freight forwarders), ship chandler and suppliers, marine insurance companies, ports and terminals, yachts and marina companies, shipyards, banks, foreign trade companies, logistics companies etc. In public sector, our graduates can be employed at administrative positions in Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, and other related ministry offices and public institutions.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Academic Plan consists of 40 compulsory and 38 elective courses. In addition to the compulsory courses students must take 10 elective courses out of the total 38 elective courses. 19 of these elective courses are in fall semester and another 19 courses are in the spring semester. The ratio of compulsory courses to elective courses in the curriculum is 190 / 50 ECTS.

With respect to the exams and course achievement grades, the related articles of Dokuz Eylul University, Associate Degree, Bachelors Degree Education and Examination Regulations (http://www.deu.edu.tr/DEUWeb/Icerik/Icerik.php KOD=5683) and Education and Examination Regulations of Maritime Faculty (http://www.deu.edu.tr/DEUWeb/Icerik/Icerik.php KOD=16707) are applied. The departments passing grade for a course is DD and the graduation grade is CC.
Evaluation and assessment methods for each course which are included in the information package are defined in the Course Description Form prepared by the related lecturer/faculty member.
