General Description
History |
Dokuz Eylül University, the Department of Translation and Interpreting was established in the academic year 1997-1998 under the roof of the Faculty of Science and Letters, offering both undergraduate and graduate studies. The Department started to accept its first graduate students in 1999 and undergraduate students in 2005. Since the Faculty of Science and Letters separated in 2010 as the Faculties of Science and the Faculty of Letters, our department has been incorporated under the Faculty of Letters. The aim of the undergraduate program is to train qualified translators and interpreters who have an advanced command in English and German in the fields of law, economics, finance, literature, social and natural sciences, technical subjects, medicine, politics, international relations and other newly-developing disciplines. In the undergraduate program, an intensive teaching program is carried out, with the aim that the students can use both German and English at an advance level. In the four-year program, students are trained to meet the expectations of the business world and the European Union in both languages. |

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination, getting score of DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test (minimum 80) or TOEFL - IBT (minimum 79) or equivalent. Student placement procedures through central system are carried out by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). In Turkish Higher Education institutions, the recognition of previous formal education and lateral and vertical transfers and transfers within the university are carried out within the scope of the assessment criteria determined by the Senate of our University and the REGULATION ON THE PRINCIPLES CONCERNING TRANSFER, DOUBLE MAJOR, MINOR AND CREDIT TRANSFER BETWEEN INSTITUTIONS AT UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION AND UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL. |
Qualification Requirements and Regulations |
4 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.In order for students to complete their education successfully in our faculty, their GPA (Grade Point Average) should be at least 2.00. Final year students who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 are entitled to take a one-course examination in order to increase the GPA if they are able to fulfil the condition of a GPA of 2.00 from the courses included in the program of the last four semesters. Those who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 through one-course examination are entitled to take a mid-term exam, final exam or make-up exam from the courses of the last four semesters. The students benefit from this right of examination in the exam period during the semester in which the courses are opened. The students who would like to benefit from this right of examination declare the exams that they will take at the beginning of the semester during registration. |

The Translation and Interpreting undergraduate program aims to raise, with modern education techniques, translator and interpreter nominees who have foreign language skills, aware of intercultural differences and the richness thereof, who are knowledgeable in intercultural communication, who can work both independently and in a team, embracing ethical values, who can take on social responsibilities, who can internalize theoretical knowledge and put it into practice, who can actualize her existing capacity in both national and international levels, competing in free market. |

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples |
This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession in the public or private enterprises.The employment opportunities of the Department of English-German Translation and Interpreting graduates range across a wide spectrum. Our graduates can work as translators or interpreters in the government ministries, national and international enterprises and companies, audiovisual media enterprises, translation agencies, local and international news agencies, in international conferences and congresses with various themes. Some of our graduates work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Head Office of the European Union and Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Head Office of Strategy Development of the Ministry of Finance as translators. Others work at the visa office of the Swedish Consulate, as foreign language teachers or instructors at the Ministry of Education, private schools and universities, as editors or translators at publishing houses, as interpreters at interpreting agencies and as research assistants at related departments of universities. They can also open their own translation offices or work as freelancers. We also have graduates who work as project coordinators or assistants at projects and institutions within the harmonization process with the European Union. Graduates can work as freelance translators and interpreters in fields with specific terminology like medicine, architecture, economics, archeology, automotive and law. They can also work in the tourism sector. They can teach at state or private institutions by obtaining a teaching certificate. Graduates can pursue further studies (at the masters or doctoral level) and follow an academic career at a university. |

The students who have completed their undergraduate education successfully can continue their studies in graduate programs (second cycle) in their own field or related fields provided that they pass the examination ALES and have sufficient knowledge of English or German. |

Graduation Requirements |
The Bachelor's Degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum, Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 70 out of 100 and have got no failing grades.Graduation requirements are explained in the section Qualification Requirements and Regulations |
