General Description

History

Master of graphic programme first established at 1993 within the scope of DEÜ Institue of Social Sciences. In the year 2002, programme transferred to Fine Arts Institue at İnciraltı campus and renovate its education and training relatedly the changes and evolutions all around the world eloquently.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 15 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Master of Fine Arts Program continuous its education program under Graphic Design Branch. Graphic Design education curriculum duration is two years and its first two semesters include visual communication classes that the theories of graphic design is been analyzed and discussed. Graphic Design curriculum has a wide range of theoretical seminars in edition to practical workshop studies to develop the students intellectual skills. The purpose of the programe is to train graphic designers and art directors who can use his senior design skills in national and international platforms and uses his intellectual skills on developing his individual design language. The education process ends up with a thesis that would be completed in two semesters. The Department s Academic Staff consists of; one professor who is also the head of the department, three assistant professor and there is one pending assistant professor position.
Six ateliers including two printing techniques atelier and four ateliers used for lectures, one graduate classroom, two computer labs (19 Mac and 18 PC total 36) with the ability of reaching internet and design programs, one animation studio which has been traditionally equipped that allows nine student to work at the same time has been constituted in the department. Internet access is available in the whole department with the help of Wi-Fi connection under the control of the system called eduroam or cable connection.
Every educational year an event called Young Brain Storming has been arranging since the academic year of 2001. This event happens in three main parts like; seminars, workshop ateliers that guided with field experts and well known designers and also a competition which carries the same name of the whole event. Young Brain Storming competition enables young designers to work with other students from different universities and departments within the same a group. Each group consists of; communication department student/s, dramatic writing department student/s and graphic department student/s. Purpose of this competition is to let the young designers gain creative experience with the help of collective working periods and to learn how to work with different department perceptions. Besides of the young brain storming event, during the educational year, department host s different seminars with the participation of native and foreign designers and lecturers. Each student in the department has a chance of exhibiting the school works in art galleries and faculty exhibition area after years of education and gaining expertise. Graphic Department also has a group called; Graphic Community/Society that enables students works individually or as a group outside of university courses.
In addition to national events there is an organization called International Student Meeting has been carrying out by the Faculty since 2002. This event gathers different educational levels of students together and within the fifteen days workshop period students creates works and portfolios. In the end of this organization participant students could have the opportunity of having exhibited their works in international group exhibitions.
From the time of the academic year of 2006-2007, with the aid of Erasmus/ LLP program our students has a chance of continuing part of their education in international universities across the Europe such as; Italy, Slovenia, England, Austria, Poland, Germany, Latvia, Croatia, Finland, Romania, Greece. Counting backward from the present department increased the amount of the agreements and within these agreements, each year at least two graduate students experiences abroad education.

1   The student shall be able to use the practical and theoretical knowledge about graphic design and art education on master s level.
2   The student shall have the knowledge and adequacy to manage graphic design and visual communication medias and technologies on master s level.
3   The student shall have the power and competency to bend and manipulate the visual communication materials for expressing impressions, thoughts and messages on master s level.
4   The student shall have practical knowledge for selecting suitable technology and the correct methodology to accomplish unique problem solving graphic design projects on master s level.
5   On the process of creating unique end impressive graphic design medias the student shall develop visual grammar and story telling skills on master s level.
6   The student shall have the master s level awareness that Effective design approach is the result of the coexistence of life long hard working with research, experiments and imagination.
7   The student shall have master s level knowledge on graphic design history, design theory and perception psychology. The student can build theoretical cross connections betwixt art history, art sociology and art philosophy during the process of understanding graphic design and visual communication history.
8   The student shall identify, investigate and explore national and universal value and status of graphic design.
9   The student shall have the skills to fallow contemporary developments of inclinations and up to date technologies on graphic design and visual communication design.
10   The student shall have the conscience and responsibility to produce in ethically and esthetically manner with a strong belief in design is a life long learning process.
11   The student shall learn to fallow different kind of recourses while designing on a high precision level.
12   The student shall have the competency to explore and express by using design the sociocultural infrastructure with interior and exterior dynamics of our environment.
13   The student shall have the competency to critique sympathetically demands and tendencies of masses whose are the consumers of graphic advertisement market.
14   The student shall have master s level competency and knowledge to develop environment friendly design products, which can improve public space.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Master of Graphic program is a graduate program for the candidates who executed bachelor degree on the related undergraduate program. Master of Graphic program is about the training of scientific research lore on visual communication and graph design history, culture, literature, education, philosophy, psychology, etc. According to this, graduates of this program can obtain and attain various positions in academics and industrial fields of visual communication and graphic design.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Graduate School of Fine Arts Educational and Examinational Regulations. The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is 75. Detailed assessment methods and criteria for courses are explained in syllabi.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of at least 7 courses, not being less than 21 national credits, a seminar and specialization courses and thesis studies, in total 120 ECTS credits.
