General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University Institute for Social Science Department of History was founded in 1998. There are 10 Professors, 5 Lecturers and 2 Research Assistants in the Department of History. Masters Degree Program with Thesis In History Of Republic of Turkey is still active as an interdisciplinary program in the Department of History. The Program is designed to focus on Turkish Republican History in order to educate Masters in History on the basis of scientific and historiographical methodologies. The mode of education is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; a minimum score of 55 from the Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 50 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM or a minimum score of 55 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test. Transcript; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of the program is to grow up historians who are expected to follow events and developments in Turkey and all over the World closely and to know historical background of happenings, to engage and build upon the work of their colleagues and predecessors and they are expected to be "original" at the same time, to be a keen observer on national and global events, to internalize critical approach to objective knowledge, to have the ability to evaluate historical sources rightly and to deal with major novelties in the world historiography.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Ability to know and to analyze political, social, economic and cultural aspects of history of Turkey and World history
2   Ability to know political, social, cultural and economic transformations that Turkey lived from Ottoman Period to Republic and to establish connections between the facts
3   Ability to have deep knowledge on steps of modernization and democracy in Turkey and in the World in the last centuries and to identify turning points in the history
4   Ability to have an idea on progresses in political thought in Turkey and to develope free critical thinking skills
5   Ability to know on individual and society, and questions of migration and urbanization in modern Turkey
6   Acquisition of skills required to know a high level Ottoman Paleography to search archive documents and journals of time
7   Ability to understand local, regional and national occurrence of facts and to compare it with global pattern
8   Acquisition of skills required to prepare a proper text on basis of academic learning norms and scientific writing style and to be confident to deliver a lecture

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 53 ECTS), a seminar (3ECTS) and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
