: American Culture and Literature

General Description

History

Department of American Culture and Literature started offering its MA program (with a thesis) in 1992 and its PhD program (with a thesis) in 1996. Language of instruction is English in all graduate courses. The MA and PhD curriculum is distinctively multidisciplinary, coming from diverse fields of study such as cultural studies, literature, history, philosophy, politics, economy, and international relations.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

American Culture and Literature Department enables the students to make interdisciplinary connections among different cultures and literatures focusing mainly on the American social and cultural heritage. The program explores theoretical, analytical, and methodological approaches from various perspectives, including cultural studies, literature, history, and economy components. The goal of the program is to have students being able to synthesize and evaluate critically.

2   Comprehend the significance of various disciplines in American Studies.
3   Develop an awareness of the issues related with race, class, religion, and gender.
4   Make a diverse analysis of American literary movements and schools with respect to primary works of American literature.
5   Evaluate American literary history in relevance to major themes and issues that have shaped American cultural mind.
6   Develop a critical perspective to diverse cultural geographies and ethnic communities in and out of the United States.
7   Define and classify different literary modes of writing referring to major works of American literature.
8   Interpret and analyze selected works of American literature in accordance with major critical theories.
9   Interpret and analyze selected works of American literature in accordance with different literary genres.
10   Be competent in research skills and academic writing.
11   Use English effectively in academic paper presentations.
12   Develop skills for critical thinking, and independent decision making.
13   Focus on the analysis of events, periods, and individuals who have shaped and continued to shape American history.
14   Provide an interdisciplinary framework on the study of history, politics and culture of the United States.
15   Develop an attitude of intellectual curiosity and life-long learning.
16   Be competent in discourse and textual analysis.
17   Be open to new ideas and be willing to develop social skills for collaboration in academic settings.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Employment after graduation is both in public and private sectors in the areas of language, culture, economy and politics. Major employment areas are English language teaching, translation, banking, tourism, international relations, public relations, journalism and media.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Students of American Culture and Literature PhD program are required to take 2 obligatory and 5 elective courses in total. There are no pool courses or obligatory/elective courses offered by other departments. All obligatory and elective courses are offered by the Department of American Culture and Literature. There are no prerequisites for courses. All courses are one-semester course. The major aim of the curriculum is to enrich students with the knowledge, skill and competence in American literature and culture, history and society, regional perspectives, institutions, politics, and economy.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (84 ECTS), a field study (3 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
