General Description

History

The aim of the Ph.D. Program in Economics is to provide the knowledge and skills for high quality scientific research in economics for a successful career in academia, the public and private sectors. The graduates will complete advanced micro-and macroeconomics courses and as well as applied micro-and macroeconomics and econometrics. The graduates will probably become academics and experts in their field of specialization; thus, the selection of courses and subjects in their education becomes crucial. The doctorate students take four elective courses from a menu of advanced courses that spans political economy, economic history, macroeconomics, microeconomics, financial economics, international economics, monetary theory, development economics, and macroeconomic issues of developing countries, industrial economics and applied econometrics. The means of education of the program is English.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum CGPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Business Department of Economics (English), Ph.D. Program in Economics comprises 12 instructors and 6 research assistants. Within the body of the Faculty, there are 4 seminar halls, 2 intelligent/technological classrooms, 21 classrooms, 3 computer laboratories and a conference hall which are endowed with necessary equipment. There are 85 computers in the computer laboratories, lounge and library within the body of the faculty, which are available to student access between the hours 08.30 22.00 in business days. The language of education of the program is English.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Students who have successfully completed the Ph.D. program possess the skills and knowledge to apply for work either in the academy or relevant positions in the public and private sectors.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

All elective courses are offered by the Department of Economics. There is no pool of obligatory and/or selective courses offered by the University. There are no pre-requisite courses. Measurement and evaluation methods for each course are defined in the particular course syllabi prepared by the instructor/s. DEU Graduate School of Social Sciences Examination Regulations and the relevant articles of the Code of Practice applies to all measurement and evaluation regarding the exams and course grades.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (84 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), a field study (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS) in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
