General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy Graduate Program was established in 2012. Department of Philosophy has started its graduate program at academic year 2012-2013. The department of philosophy conducts research and teaching in all major disciplines of philosophy.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; a minimum score of 55 from the Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 50 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM or a minimum score of 55 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test. Transcript; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy program has seven faculty members from different disciplines and two research assistants. 2 year graduate program of Department of Philosophy, consists 8 semesters. The language of the courses that offered in the program is Turkish.

1   Being able to define basic concepts, questions and problems of various disciplines of philosophy.
2   Being able to know main solutions of basic philosophical problems in the framework of the knowledge of history of philosophy.
3   Being able to evaluate the ideas of philosophers who take place in history of philosophy.
4   Being able to discuss the ideas of philosophers who take place in history of philosophy.
5   Being able to relate main philosophical problems and their solutions that put forward by various philosophers.
6   Being able to evaluate main philosophical problems and their solutions suggested by various philosophers in the light of local and global problems.
7   Being able to discuss practical problems and their present solutions on the basis of theoretical problems and their theoretical solutions.
8   Being able to grasp new philosophical problems on the practical and theoretical issues.
9   Being able to find solutions to the new philosophical problems from the history of philosophy.
10   Being able to transfer the solutions which he/she found in the history of philosophy to others verbally and written.
11   Being able to discuss the basic problems of the history of philosophy and the current solutions for these problems in the light of the current situation which country and the world is in.
12   Being able to evaluate and update the old philosophical problems in the basis of country's and world s current situation.
13   Being able to grasp new philosophical problems in the basis of country's and world's current situation.
14   Being able to find solutions to the new philosophical problems which caught in the basis of country's and world's current situation with the help of the history of philosophy.
15   Being able to transfer the solutions to others verbally and written in which he/she grasped in the light of the situation which the world is in today.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Students with a Masters degree at Philosophy may be employed by various public institutions such as Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Social Services and etc., private educational institutions, Psychotechnic Evaluation Centres and Industrial establishments. Graduate students can get certificate of formation in order to teach at public and private institutions. Moreover, they may proceed with their careers in the academic field at Doctoral level and go on with their scientific researches under the umbrella of the university.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In the curriculum of Department of Philosophys Graduate programs academic program, courses corresponding to a total of 120 ECTS are presented to students. Students has to take elective courses which are equivalent to 120 ECTS and to acquire at least 2.50 GPA (grade points average) on a 4.00 scale. Moreover, the student must successfully complete a thesis project. Program Objectives: Bringing up philosophers who is informed historically and systematically main philosophical concepts and problems, being able to make use of these informations in order to account for human and world problems, explain clearly their philosophical solutions concerning them to the others in writing and verbally.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 55 ECTS) a seminar (2 ECTS) and field study (3 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS) in total 120 ECTS credits.Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
