General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy Non-Thesis Master s Program was established in 2014. The aim of the program is to support the students who studied positive sciences or social sciences to gain extensive knowledge about theoretical and practical subjects of philosophy; and to present how to apply the theoretical knowledge.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

1,5 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 90 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy program has six faculty members from different disciplines, two teaching assistants and four research assistants. 2 year graduate program of Department of Philosophy consists 8 semesters. The language of the courses that offered in the program is Turkish.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Being able to comprehend what philosophy is, its origin, its development and the point it reached.
2   Being able to learn which disciplines philosophy consists of, and the key concepts of each disciplines, to comprehend the fundamental problems which distinguishes separates off the disciplines from each other, to define relevant questions and problems.
3   Being able to learn in which periods of the history of philosophy what kind of solutions were offered for the fundamental issues of philosophy.
4   Being able to evaluate how the offered solutions for the fundamental issues of philosophy were developed by philosophers.
5   Being able to discuss the solutions propounded by philosophers for the fundamental issues of philosophy.
6   Being able to transfer in written and verbally to others the fundamental issues of philosophy and the solutions offered by philosophers .
7   Acquiring both written and verbal ability of propounding a philosophical problem and developing solution proposals for that problem.
8   Being able to evaluate the fundamental problems of philosophy and the offered solutions for those problems in consideration of the problems of the country and the world.
9   Being able to know how to approach practically and theoretically the issues and the given solutions.
10   Acquiring the ability of solving intellectual problems in practical and notional aspects.
11   Being able to comprehend the historical dimension of thought and practise upon history of philosophy while solving new and current problems.
12   Being able to transfer to others the solutions that are found in the history of philosophy for the philosophical issues at practical and notional levels.
13   Being able to present the phenomena which are experienced in local and global platforms but not yet conceptualized as discussible issues and to discuss those issues.
14   Being able to create the opportunity to understand the current situation of the country and of the world by means of the conceptual materials that philosophy presents; being able to indicate how philosophy can develop a solution for the common issues.
15   Being able to discuss how theoretical and practical approaches of philosophy can be useful for the professionals who study in other scientific fields; and being able to evaluate philosophy as a fundamental science in comprehending and answering the problems encountered in other scientific fields.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Students with a Non-Thesis Masters degree at Philosophy may be employed by various public institutions such as Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Social Services and etc., private educational institutions, Psychotechnic Evaluation Centres and Industrial establishments. They may be employed as authors by governmental or private media organs. They may work at non-governmental organisations as specialists or advisors.

Graduates may apply to the related employment positions in their area of specialization.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Non-Thesis Program is comprised of courses (at least 75 ECTS), Term Project (15 ECTS), in total 90 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
