General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Psychology Doctorate Program has started to accept students in 2015-2016 academic years. The aim of the program which is based on scientific research and practice-oriented curriculum is to help students to acquire advanced levels of specialized skills, experience and knowledge beyond the students master s level of psychology knowledge; to produce information by following up the current literature and research findings; and to transfer and apply effectively the information to related persons/organizations. The medium of education is 30% English and the program consists of compulsory courses about scientific research and methods and elective courses oriented towards sub-fields of psychology.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Psychology Doctorate Program aims to train psychologists with doctorate degree who have both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills from different subfields of psychology; who can adapt the knowledge and skills into new facts and circumstances when necessary; who can find and figure out national/international knowledge and evidence using different information sources; who can discuss various issues related to the field by adopting scientific research methods and produce original knowledge; and who can transfer these produced or acquired knowledge and skills into the relevant individuals and groups effectively. Besides, the doctorate program aims to bring up psychologists who are aware of their professional responsibility and who hold strong ethical principles. Education program consists of scientific research and methods, obligatory courses on statistics, and specific and elective courses related to the sub-fields of psychology. There is one applied psychology laboratory equipped with necessary tools and conditions for applied courses taken during the psychology doctorate education.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To able to comprehend advanced level knowledge in psychology area line with historical and contemporary theories, concepts and scientific research methods and to predict their implications in administrations
2   To able to explain and interpret psychological phenomena and situations by using certain theoretical approaches and to support these explanations with scientific research findings
3   To able to question scientific approaches, contemporary research findings and current explanations in a critical manner, to identify shortcomings in a rational mode and to present possible solutions in accordance with current needs.
4   To be able to observe and produce implications of information and findings in psychology with relevant other disciplines and to present suggestions for possible interactions
5   To able to produce empirical and original research questions and to contribute national and international scientific contexts by designing a study with scientific research methods, collecting data and interpret results
6   To be able to adapt and administer knowledge on theories and applications in psychology for possible situations in future and to construct intervention programs and projects by making new formulations in a new and outstanding approach
7   To be able to administer knowledge on theories and applications in psychology in line with relevant legal regulations, professional ethical standards and social responsibilities and to cooperate with colleagues, experts and organizations in national/international contexts
8   . To be able to emphasize personal and professional improvement and growth, to follow current knowledge and findings with life-long development and to adapt them into professional area of theory and applications
9   To be able to transfer knowledge and experience to various individuals, groups and organizations, to explain in accordance with qualities of different target groups by using appropriate methods and instruments
10   To be able to follow current developments in psychology area, to conduct various studies in micro and/ or macro levels (i.e., individual and/or group) on those issues, to present those findings in scientific and professional contexts and to produce relevant publications

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related doctorate degree enables the holder to exercise the profession as academic members in universities. Besides the academic field, the specialty acquired by this doctorate degree provide employment opportunities in various public institutions such as Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Social Services ant etc., private educational institutions, Psychotherapy and Counseling Centers, Rehabilitation Centers etc..

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In curriculum of Department of Psychology Graduate programs academic program, courses corresponding to at least 27 credits and 240 ECTS are presented to the students. Students must successfully complete courses which are equivalent to 240 ECTS in order to get the doctorate degree. Besides, the students who succeed the following profiency exam need to successfully complete a thesis project.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (81 ECTS), a field study (6 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
