General Description

History

The PhD in Translation Studies of the Department of Translation and Interpreting opened in 2015. The Department of Translation and Interpreting accepted its first students in the Master s program in 1999 and undergraduate students in 2005. Now offered with the experience of 16 years, the PhD in Translation Studies was opened by virtue of decree number 33909 of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK) dated 18.06.2015.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The Ph.D. program in Translation Studies aims to encourage and promote research and scholarship in all fields related to translation. The Ph.D. program offers expertise in the field of Translation Studies, and in particular, aims to train academicians and researchers for these fields. To attain this goal, students, selected in compliance with high standards of qualification, are trained in an intensive and comprehensive program. In addition to courses on theory, literature, linguistics and history, the program offers courses that enhance the students capabilities of conducting research and teaches existing methods in these subjects.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Being able to apply theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in translation studies at an advanced level;
2   Being able to comprehend various interdisciplinary interactions in respect to translation; to analyze basic theoretical terms and ideas concerning literary theories, linguistics, philosophy of language, sociology of language and similar interdisciplinary studies through scientific methods; to interpret and evaluate the data;
3   Being able to have access to new information in translation studies systematically, and to acquire high-level skills in research methods related to translation;
4   Being able to follow the current theoretical discussions and methods in the field of translation studies; to apply these theories and methods in analyses and research; and to contribute to the process of becoming an information society;
5   Acquiring awareness on the social responsibility of translation products, and awareness as regards the necessity to use the knowledge and skills, bearing this responsibility in mind.
6   Being able to apply the translation skills within the requirements of the business life; acquiring thorough knowledge about the possible different necessities of various disciplines such as technology, law and media; and being able to develop strategies that can meet these requirements;
7   Being able to apply the imbibed knowledge and practical skills in the field by making presentations at national and international meetings or publishing articles in national/international scientific journals;
8   Being able to develop new ideas and methods in the field of translation, using the high level mental processes such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving and decision making;
9   Acquiring ability to interpret and criticize other studies, and to share his/her studies using the academic networks in the field of translation effectively;
10   Being able to conduct scientific research in the field of translation independently.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (81 ECTS), a field study (6 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
