DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Mechanical Engineering

General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEU - MMB) started teaching as a part of the Faculty of Engineering at Ege University in 1968. The Department became a part of newly founded Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Dokuz Eylül University in 1982. After the departure of the departments of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning, the name of the faculty changed as the Faculty of Engineering.
From the start of the education in 1975, until 1992, only the formal education program has been implemented. Since 1992 second education program has been carried out too. Currently, 30% English Assisted Turkish Program is defined as the formal and the second education. Besides the Undergraduate programs, the department has five graduate programs at the Institute of Science and Technology.

Qualification Awarded

Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor's Degree (B.Sc.)

Level of Qualification

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree)

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The regulation on Switching between Programs in Higher Education Level of national council of higher education and the evaluation terms and conditions on horizontal transitions, approved by the University Senate are carried out for the students, who wish to transfer to Dokuz Eylul University form the higher education institutions in Turkey and in foreign countries.
For the continuation of the graduates of vocational schools to undergraduate programs in accordance with their the fields via the vertical transitions, The regulation on Vocational Schools and Public Education of national council of higher education is carried out.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The student must complete 4 years of study acquiring 240 (ECTS) credits. This degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum, 10 weeks of internship, Graduation Project and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and no failing grades. The student must also succeed one elective course both from the thermal design and the mechanical design elective course groups.

Profile of the Programme

The objectives of Mechanical Engineering Program is to have graduates who collaborate effectively in professional organizations and processes, who improve their skills with their lifelong learning capabilities, who participate in multidisciplinary studies and take part in engineering teams with their strong communication skills, who can solve the engineering problems by their research and development skills with contemporary scientific and technological developments, who develop realistic, sustainable solutions concerning social, ethical, environmental and economical aspects of problems and who is preferred in innovative design and development..
In accordance with program objectives and aim, the courses, in main mechanical engineering areas such as thermodynamics, energy, mechanics, manufacturing and construction, automotive and machine theory and dynamics, are offered. Lectures are also assisted with modern educational tools.
The successful students can have chance to attend double major undergraduate program or minor program on textile engineering or industrial engineering or Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (details). The students who fulfilled Minor program receives a certificate and the students who fulfilled Major program successfully receives a diploma in his/her major program.
The Mechanical engineering educational program has been accredited by MÜDEK since 2004 and has the EUR-ACE label since 2011. In 2011, the Bologna Process has started. The aim of the Bologna Process is to create a European Higher Education Area based on international cooperation and academic exchange that is attractive to European students and staff as well as to students and staff from other parts of the world. The program aim and outcomes of the program, which are defined previously for MÜDEK, has updated according to requirements of the European Higher Education Area. As a preliminary result, the university received the Diploma Supplement Label and the students, who graduated 2011 or later, can take their Diploma Supplements. The progress aiming at to obtain ECTS label continues. The department has 5 bilateral agreements for exchange students and academic staff with prestigious European Universities. As of the year 2013, the faculty of the department consists of 11 professors, 11 associate professors, 9 assistant professors and 2 lecturers. Together with the faculty 16 research assistants carry on with research activities which not only supports educational program but also supports the research activities of the public and private institutions. The students have access to 23 research and education laboratories throughout their study to fulfill experimental task in context of offered educational program.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The education and examination regulations of Dokuz Eylül University on associate degree and undergraduate programs and rules of Engineering Faculty on examinations and education is applied for grading and examinations. In mechanical engineering department, the grade for to be successful in a course, is DD and the necessary grade for graduation is DD. The applied evaluation and assessment methods for each course are defined in Course Description Form which is prepared by the lecturer(s) of the course.

Graduation Requirements

The student must complete 4 years of study acquiring 240 (ECTS) credits. This degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all course in the curriculum, 10 weeks of internship, Graduation Project and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and no failing grades. The student must also succeed one elective course both from the thermal design and the mechanical design elective course groups.
