General Description

History

Architecture education in İzmir began in Ege Private School of Architecture and Engineering in Buca in 1963. Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture was founded on the 3rd of July in 1992. However, the establishment of the faculty and the launch of the education in Alsancak goes back until 1971 with 12 undergraduate students of Architecture. Since then, it has been structured within the framework of various institutional and legal entities. The milestones of the faculty from the past until today are summarized as; Ege University Engineering Sciences Faculty Academy of Engineering and Architecture (1971), Ege University Fine Arts Faculty (1975), Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (1982), Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture (1992). After the 33-years of education in the building in Alsancak, the faculty building moved to Tinaztepe Campus in Buca in the 2004-2005 academic year.

The mission of architecture department is to educate, research and make contribution to the society.
Our educational mission is to educate architects who; have universal ideas and values, depend on ethical values, can think critically, can make multifacated contribution to the country and the world culture in the field, are sensitive to social, cultural and physical environment, can produce creative and innovative solutions in order to meet the requirements by reading social, economic and spatial problems correctly, is open to interdisciplinary communication and interaction, can follow currently valid technological developments and use opportunities, and is adopted the principle of lifelong learning.
As the oldest institution of architectural education in the Aegean region, our departments vision is; to maintain the equivalence of training and research, to develop interdisciplinary education model by creating a variety of courses in undergraduate and graduate education, to monitor and apply developing technology to increase education quality, to promote the exchange of students and academic staff between institutions by carrying out joint projects with domestic and foreign prestigious educational institutions, to provide new media and opportunities for scientific research, to develop joint projects with public organizations who are our stakeholders, to become one of the most prestigious educational and research institutions in national and international levels.
The undergraduate education program of our department is a formal education program and the educational language of the undergraduate program is Turkish. The educational language of the graduate program is English (30%).

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination.
Admission, examination and assessment procedures of students are issued on the basis of the Higher Education Act and decisions and the regulations made according to the Board of the Higher Education on the basis of the Higher Education Act. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

For students who intend to transfer to Dokuz Eylül University from universities in Turkey and in foreign countries, the articles of Regulation on the principles of student transfer between programs of associate and undergraduate degrees in higher education institutions, dual major and minor program standards and principles on credit transfers between institutions as well as the Evaluation Criteria on Student Transfer determined by Dokuz Eylül University Senate are applied.
The vertical transfers of the graduates of Vocational Schools to undergraduate programs related to their completed programs are subject to the rules of Regulation on the continuation of the graduates of Vocational Schools and Distant Learning Programs to undergraduate programs.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The student should have 240 ECTS at the end of 4 years of education.
The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum and internships, and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS.
Students studying in the undergraduate program of architecture have to take thirteen (13) departmental elective courses. Minimum two of these courses should belong to Architectural Design Branch (Group A), minimum two of these courses should belong to Structural Construction Design Branch (Group B) and minimum two of these courses should belong to Restoration Branch (Group C).

Profile of the Programme

Architecture programs objective is; to educate architects who are equipped with the basic knowledge and skills in all aspects of architecture and who adopt the principle of lifelong learning.
As part of studies conducted in the context of Bologna Process, the undergraduate educational program has been reviewed and our program has been restructured in accordance with contemporary architectural developments and requirements. The ratio of elective courses has been adjusted as 25%.
In our department, student and staff mobility is realized in connection with ERASMUS Student and Staff Exchange Program and FARABİ National Exchange Program.
Projects and various occupational activities are conducted in cooperation with Professional chambers and Municipalities.
There are 8 studios, 4 classes, 3 graduate classes, a computer laboratory and a conference hall in our department.
The educational and research activities are conducted by the faculty consisting of 4 professors, 10 associate professors, 17 assistant professors, 17 research assistants, and 2 specialists in 2013.

7   To have adequate knowledge and skills to create quality living environments and spaces (physical environment and architectural product) at any scale and in all fields (natural, urban, public).
8   To be able to evaluate social, economic, political, cultural, legal factors affecting the architecture of today.
9   To be able to ensure the integrity of discourse, theory and practice at architectural design events and research.
10   To evaluate by understanding the impact that shapes and sustains global and local architecture, historic heritage.
11   To have the ability of recognition, conservation, documentation, examination, evaluation of historical environment.
12   To be able to understand project management, cost, risk reduction, expanding practice, diversity issues as for architectural practice.
13   To be able to make the integration of building construction systems and structural systems and gaining the ability of learning and assembling.
14   Evaluating by learning knowledge about architectural approach for the application and design of the architectural project, structural systems / theory relationship, building physics, materials, details.
15   To have a minimum level of knowledge to prepare application project, on the Architecture / Structural Construction Design field.
16   Being equipped with the knowledge of architectural design culture, history, theory and criticism of art and architecture.
17   Ability to communicate architectural ideas and proposals in visual, written and oral form.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of the Department of Architecture can find jobs in a wide range of area in public sector as well as private sector. Our graduates are employed in the private sector in architectural offices, construction companies, construction sites, consulting and auditing companies or foreign organizations while in the public sector, they can work in various institutions such as Municipalities, Special Provincial Administration, Directorate of Foundations and Ministry of Culture.
Some of our graduates continue their academic career at universities and start to work as a research assistant. Some work in areas in different parts of the public sector duties. In addition, there are some graduates as a freelance architect who is working as project architect at the office, as a construction site architect at the construction site, as providing consulting services, working on the presentation (3D - three-dimensional presentation, model, etc.) are available.
Our graduates often do not face problems with employment because architecture is a spacious work area and our graduates are preferred highly.

Access to Further Studies

Department of Architecture graduates can apply for graduate programs in the relevant field. In this context, there are M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Architectural Design, Structural Construction Design, Restoration branches that are connected to the Institute of Science and Technology of our University. In addition, some graduates try post-graduate training in different educational institutions to recognize and take advantage of cadres, especially Istanbul Technical University in Istanbul, Middle East Technical University in Ankara applying to related programs, accepted or provide opportunities for graduate study in foreign educational institutions.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Architecture Department curriculum has 56 courses, 43 of which are compulsory and 13 are elective. 25% of all courses are elective and 75% are compulsory. In the elective curse pool there are altogether 70 courses with 35 courses in fall and spring semesters. There are two elective courses in the 3rd semester, two in the 5th semester, one in the 6th semester, and four in the 7th and 8th semesters. It is necessary to choose at least two elective courses from design package (Group A), at least two elective courses from construction package (Group B), and at least two elective courses from restoration package (Group C).

Exam and passings grades are regulated according to the rules and regulations of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations for Undergraduate and Graduate Education and Examination (with date 12th August 2011 and No:28023 Official Journal) and relevant points of Faculty of Architecture undergraduate programs Education and Examination Rules of Practice as indicated in the catalogs.
Exams and grades are regulated according to Dokuz Eylul University Regulations for Undergraduate and Graduate Education and Examination (http://www.deu.edu.tr/DEUWeb/Icerik/Icerik.php KOD=5683) and relevant items of Faculty of Architecture Rules of Practice for Education and Examination (www.deu.edu.tr/Uploaded/Files/Birimler/11392/yonet.pdf). The passing grade is DD, and minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 is required for graduation (the graduation grade is CC).
Measurement and evaluation methods for each course are defined in the Course Syllabus Form, which are prepared by the instructor/s and included in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

The student should complete all the courses successfully in order to graduate from this 4 year program. The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum and internship of 108 workdays (18 weeks) and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS.
