General Description

History

The Department of Comparative Literature started its formal undergraduate (B.A.) program at the academic year of 2015-2016. The instruction language of 50% of the courses is English; thus, preparation school in English is obligatory for all students who did not pass the English exam offered by the School of Foreign Languages. Research and education in all main subject and interdisciplinary areas of Comparative Literature are carried out in the program of the department.

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination. Providing high school diploma and being placed in the program as a result of the Student Selection Examination conducted through the central system at the national level. Student placement procedures through central system are carried out by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

In Turkish Higher Education institutions, the recognition of previous formal education and lateral and vertical transfers and transfers within the university are carried out within the scope of the assessment criteria determined by the Senate of our University and the REGULATION ON THE PRINCIPLES CONCERNING TRANSFER, DOUBLE MAJOR, MINOR AND CREDIT TRANSFER BETWEEN INSTITUTIONS AT UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION AND UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL.
(1) In lateral transfers to the Faculty of Letters, the provisions of the Regulation on the Principles Concerning Transfer, Double Major, Minor and Credit Transfer between Institutions at Upper Secondary Education and Undergraduate Level, published in the Official Gazette dated 24/4/2010 No. 27561.
(2) In vertical transfers to the Faculty of Letters, the provisions of the Regulation on the Continuation of Graduates of Vocational Schools and Open Learning Upper Secondary Education with Undergraduate Programs, published in the Official Gazette dated 19/2/2002 and No. 24676.
(3) In the transfers of those who completed or those who could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational schools, the provisions of the Regulation on Awarding Upper Secondary Education Diploma to those who could or could not complete their Undergraduate Education or Adjustment of those who could or could not complete their Undergraduate Education to Vocational Schools, published in the Official Gazette dated 18/3/1989 and No. 20112.
In Turkey, the recognition of in-formal and non-formal education is yet on the onset. Therefore, the recognition of previous education has not been fully initiated in all programs at Dokuz Eylul University. However, if the student has successfully completed some of the courses in the program in the institutions where s/he previously studied, s/he can be exempted from all or some of these courses in line with the opinion of the adjustment commission.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total. In order for students to complete their education successfully in our faculty, their GPA (Grade Point Average) should be at least 2.00. Final year students who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 are entitled to take a one-course examination in order to increase the GPA if they are able to fulfil the condition of a GPA of 2.00 from the courses included in the program of the last four semesters. Those who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 through one-course examination are entitled to take a mid-term exam, final exam or make-up exam from the courses of the last four semesters. The students benefit from this right of examination in the exam period during the semester in which the courses are opened. The students who would like to benefit from this right of examination declare the exams that they will take at the beginning of the semester during registration.
In order to graduate from the Department of Comparative Literature, to successfully complete preparation school and all the courses (equivalent to 240 ECTS) included in the program and to acquire at least 2.00 GPA (grade points average) on a 4.00 scale are the essential conditions for qualification.

Profile of the Programme

4 year undergraduate program of Department of Comparative Literature consists of 8 semesters. Teaching Language of 50% of all courses is English.
The aim of the program is:
- To qualify students as comparatists who are in command of basic concepts and issues of Comparative Literature and respective interdisciplines within their historical and systematic framework;
- who are in command of more than one foreign language (French or German besides English) and are acquinted with cultures, arts and literatures related with the respective foreign languages and especially contemporary Turkish and Western literatures;
- who share this knowledge with the Turkish public and all related circles of literature, art and culture, and who can present contemporary Turkish culture and literature in foreign countries;
- who can conduct comparative analyses on the products of Turkish and Western cultures and literatures, their philosophical, religious, linguistic, artistic and ethnological factors as well as their causes and effects;
- who are able to compare and draw conclusions and share their studies results with the respective societies of Turkish and Western literatures;
- who are experts concerning issues of Western cultures of which Turkey is a part of and who are able to introduce them to the parties concerned;
- who make use of their knowledge in order to explain, interpret and solve individual, social and global issues;
- who use their interlectual power meticulously, creatively and critically;
- who welcome new ideas;
- who are able to recognize and discuss current problems;
- who are able to suggest solutions to current problems;
- who are able to convey their thoughts openly, correctly and intelligibly in writing or orally.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Upon completing the undergraduate programme, graduates are expected to: Make use of their knowledge and competences regarding comparative literature as a scientific discipline;
2   Be in command of the requirements of interdisciplinary approaches in comparative literature studies (philosophy, history of religions, psychoanalysis, cultural studies etc.);
3   Make use of their knowledge of literary genres, concepts and terms;
4   Make use of theoretical and applied approaches to different cultures, cultural transfer and interaction;
5   Be able to apply literary, critical, historical and linguistic approaches to textual analysis;
6   Apply critically Western theories and methods of analysis to Turkish literature;
7   Analize linguistic, lexical, syntactical, textual and semantical structure of English and a second foreign language, as well as produce advanced oral and written texts in the respective languages;
8   Be able to produce efficient strategies concerning literary translation;
9   Be able to utilise analytic strategies during the process of freethinking and incorporate the results in critical and creative processes to generate new ideas and projects;
10   Be able to transfer the extent of knowledge, communication skills, critical viewpoint and flexibility they have gained through the study of culture and literature to other areas of life (tourist guiding, translation, international relations, editing, etc.);
11   Have developed a world view that is aware and critical of elements such as language, religion, gender, cultural and sexual identities and diversities;
12   Be able to make use of the knowledge and skills they have obtained in awareness of their professional and ethical responsibilities;
13   Develop independent operative skills by taking initiative in their field of study;
14   Be able to work in teams as well as individually.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession in public or private enterprises. Graduates can be employed: by the media and publishing companies because of their foreign language skills and their knowledge about cultures, arts and literatures; as literary critics by radio and television broadcasting companies and as editorial staff members by the press and publishing companies; as consultants and experts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs; as consultants, researchers, communication executives, translators by foreign companies and institutions and in various other positions by foreign and domestic companies. Moreover, they may proceed with their careers in the academic field (Master and Doctoral level) and go on with their scientific researches under the umbrella of the university.

Access to Further Studies

The students who have completed their undergraduate education successfully can continue their studies in graduate programs (second cycle) in their own field or related fields provided that they pass the examination ALES and have sufficient knowledge of English.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

The teaching language of 50% of the courses in this program is in English and 50% of the courses in Turkish. Students are obliged to take at least 2 (two) departmental electives of which one has to be instructed in English in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th semester. Students are expected to take a second foreign language (French or German) in the 3rd semester and must proceed in the same foreign language in the following semesters. Students are free to take ESH-courses (or other non-departmental courses) up to 8 (eight) ECTS once they fulfill the 30 (thirty) ECTS in departmental courses. Students graduate with a minimum of 180 NC or with a minimum of 240 ECTS.

Graduation Requirements

The degree is awarded to students who have successfully passed the preparation class in English and completed all courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS. Graduation requirements are as stated in the chapter Qualification Requirements and Regulations.
