General Description

History

Higher Economy and Trade School, on which contemporary Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences was founded upon, was established on September 9th, 1944. It was renamed as Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy on June 8th, 1959 by the by the Law No. 7334. It was included in Ege University as a faculty in 1968. With the establishment of Dokuz Eylül University by Decree Law No. 41 on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions, it was joined the establishment as Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. Contemporarily, the Faculty consists of seven departments which are Business Administration, Economics, Public Finance, Labour Economics and Industrial Relations, Public Administration, Econometrics and Management Information Systems. All departments have both day and evening formal education programmes.
Management Information Systems are disciplines containing both management and information. At the present time, with the innovations in management brought by Information Technology,more efficient and effective decision making processes had occurred. In addition, Management of Information Systems had independently become a management issue. Topics related do Management Information Systems had emerged interaction and integration of these two fieds.

Qualification Awarded

The graduates, who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum of Econometrics Programme, are awarded with the Bachelors Degree in Management Information Systems.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of prior learning for Management Information Systems Programme are in conformance with general requirements of Dokuz Eylül University. These rules and regulations can be accessed through web page http://www.deu.edu.tr/ders-katalog/eng/eng-b7.html.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students are required to successfully complete all courses of the program (equivalent to 240 ECTS total) and obtain a minimum average grade point of 2.00 out of 4.00. In addition, conditions in the relevant articles of the second and fourth parts of the Associate and Bachelors Degree Education and Examination Regulations (http://www.deu.edu.tr/DEUWeb/Icerik/Icerik.php KOD=5683) should be met.

Profile of the Programme

Management Information Systems are disciplines containing both management and information. At the present time, with the innovations in management brought by Information Technology,more efficient and effective decision making processes had occurred. In addition, Management of Information Systems had independently become a management issue. Topics related do Management Information Systems had emerged interaction and integration of these two fieds. The purpose is not only to make graduate students knowledgeable about contemporary Information Systems and Technologies used for optimization of decision making processes of managers , but also they are expected to have enough knowledge about analytical thinking and structure of an organization.

- The advantage of the programme is to train students in order to be able to develop Information Systems in organizations and having enough knowledge for management of them.
- The programme focuses on the technical, analytical, managerial thinking and communication capabilities. Students receiving education if this programme will be trained to make them well-supported in these issues below:
- To have knowledge about the principles of Information Systems
- To have the logic of software development
- To understand the principles and management of telecommunication networks
- To implement the analysis and design of Information Systems
- To implement analysis and design of database systems
- To have knowledge about the benefits of enterprise and supply chain systems
- To track and control the process of software development
- To determine requirements between users who do not have technical knowledge and top management thanks to communication
- To convert requirements into design
- To reflect user requirements to Information Systems

The program also provides the opportunity to specialize in fields not only about Information Technologies but also Erasmus lectures in English optional to students .In addition local students can benefit both from Farabi Exchange Program through Turkish Universities and Erasmus exchange Program through European universities for one or two semesters.
In the 2015-2016 Academic Year, Department of Management Information Systems continues education and research activities with an academic staff consists of 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 4 assistant professors and 1 research assistants.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Employing knowledge which is gained in Information Technologies and Business Science to make decisions with using appropriate tools.
2   Recognizing the hardware, identifying the specifications of the hardware, comparing different hardware, classifying hardware and choosing the appropriate hardware.
3   Planning and managing the software development process with acquiring knowledge about softare types, selection of software, purchasing software.
4   Designing databse for applications.
5   Constructing computer neywrok systems and solving the problems encountered from networks and hardware.
6   Identfying the data requirements for MIS based problem solving of different disciplines, providing the data, compiling the data and making the data ready to use.
7   Identfying necessaries of information systems and performing system analysis and design.
8   Designing a MIS project for solving social problems and proposing different solution methodologies.
9   Generating project design as a MIS expert, contributing to the project as a manager or as an employee and producing innovative ideas.
10   Taking individual responsibility at every stage of an IT system problem which could be solved by team, contributing to the team and leading the team if it is necessary.
11   Tracking the professional, current and emerging trends with using Turkish and English languages and enrolling the necessary information orally and in writing to other colleqgues.
12   Assessing acquired knowledge and skills in the field critically and integrating then to different disciplines.
13   Behaving according to social ethics in professional work.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates can be occupied at state institutions¸ private sectors ,departments of MIS, data processing, knowledge management, data analysis, project management, information systems, research and development in universities. Institutions mentioned have need of these person in order to decide truly in management and to offer optimum level of service without standing behind the developing technologies. For example, there has been a demand for system support personals, IT managers, analysis and reporting experts, and business analysts in sector.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates who completed undergraduate programs requirements successfully can register to second and third cycle programs (masters and doctorate) of national and international higher education institutions if they can meet the related requirements.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course are defined in the course details prepared by the faculty member/s that can be reached in the Information Package. The relevant articles of ASSOCIATE AND UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AND EXAM REGULATIONS (http://www.deu.edu.tr/DEUWeb/Icerik/Icerik.php KOD=5683) of the Council of Higher Education and EDUCATION AND EXAM APPLICATION REGULATIONS of Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Dokuz Eylül University (http://www.iibf.deu.edu.tr/sanal_ ogrenci/ sayfa=genel/yonetmelikler/ogretim_sinav_uygulama_esaslari.htm) are applied to the exam and course grades.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements are as described in the Qualification Requirements and Rules section. The requirement for graduation is to complete all of the courses in the programme (equivalent to 240 ECTS total) successfully and to have a CGPA of minimum 2.00 out of 4.00. Also, second and fourth parts of the articles of the conditions in the Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations must be met (http://www.deu.edu.tr/DEUWeb/Icerik/Icerik.php KOD=5683).
