Course Objective

To give students the proficiency to apply basic information regarding music theory.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognize main concepts of basic music theory. 2   Identify and write notes on treble clef. 3   Distinguish note values. 4   Explain basic concepts of simple and compound meters. 5   Write and describe rudimentary tempo, articulation and expression terms.

Week Subject Description 1 Introduction. 2 The concept of clef; types of clefs. 3 Use of treble clef. 4 Introduction to note values: Whole note 5 Note writing exercises on treble clef. 6 Writing notes on ledger lines. 7 Writing and reading of whole and half notes on treble clef. 8 The concept of meter / measure. 9 Simple meters. 10 Quarter and eighth notes. 11 Music terms: Tempo, expression and articulation. 12 Note writing exercises using simple meters. 13 Review of all topics. 14 Midterm Exam
