Course Objective

The objective of this course is to develop the musical skills necessary for students to engage in meaningful collaborative performance using selections from the accompanied solo repertoire. In addition, the course provides students with opportunities to familiarize themselves with and perform concerto literature through accompanied lessons with the piano reduction of the orchestral score. Finally, the course helps prepare students for performances at jury examinations, concerts and recitals.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Develop collaborative playing skills;
2   Develop sensitivity to nuance of style, tempo and intonation by working with piano accompaniment;
3   Learn to signal and coordinate fluctuations in dynamics and tempo by working with a collaborative pianist;
4   Work toward an ideal collaborative performance by sharing an awareness of structural and rhythmic unity;
5   Become familiar with both the existing discographies (using available aural and visual recordings) and also with the critical literature of relevant repertoire;
6   Plan and participate in performance opportunities such as recitals, competitions and masterclasses;
7   Audition for employment with orchestras as opportunities arise.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Course Introduction Discussion of repertoire to be studied (according to instrument instructor's curriculum requirements), exchange of contact information, discussion of course requirements and grading procedures.
2 Review Play through and discuss a baroque or classical sonata previously studied. Review stylistic characteristics of the period, explore recorded versions and, if available, view online manuscript versions of the score.
3 New Repertoire I Begin work on a movement of a sonata or short piece. Note musical cadences, tempo changes, modulations and formal structure of the movement.
4 Review Review work from the previous week. Increase knowledge and awareness of each other's scores. Listen to a recording and discuss stylistic traits and performance practice characteristics of the relevant period.
5 Ensemble Critique Arrange for the instrument instructor to attend the lesson. Discuss aspects of ensemble playing and address any technical difficulties encountered by the student.
6 New Repertoire II Review and rehearse according to the instrument instructor's suggestions. Begin work on another movement or new piece.
7 Review Continue to build on the previous weeks' work toward learning the new repertoire.
8 Ensemble Critique Arrange for the instrument instructor to attend the lesson. Discuss aspects of ensemble playing and address any technical difficulties encountered by the student.
9 New Repertoire III Review and rehearse according to the instrument instructor's suggestions. Begin work on another movement or new piece.
10 Review Continue to build on the previous weeks' work toward learning the new repertoire.
11 Ensemble Critique Arrange for the instrument instructor to attend the lesson. Discuss aspects of ensemble playing and address any technical difficulties encountered by the student.
12 Performance Preparation I Review and rehearse according to the instrument instructor's suggestions. Begin to prepare for a performance by discussing large-scale aspects such as formal structure and thematic relationships between movements. Record each movement and listen together, noting areas for improvement.
13 Performance Preparation II Discuss techniques for dealing with performance anxiety. Establish and agree upon ideal tempos for the performance. Record each movement and listen together, acknowledging both positive aspects and areas for improvement.
14 Performance Preparation III Arrange for this rehearsal to be in the performance venue. Discuss ideal positions for optimum visual and aural communication. Note acoustic aspects of the venue and deal with any unexpected balance issues.
15 Examination Perform the relevant repertoire in front of an audience or jury.

Recomended or Required Reading

Whenever possible, Urtext edition musical scores will be used. These can be obtained commercially or from the conservatory's music library. Supplemental resources include scores in the common domain available through online databases and libraries such as IMSLP and NMA. Reference materials may also be found online and in the conservatory library and recording studio in the form of audio and video recordings and biographical, historical and critical literature.

Assessment Criteria

In addition to the examination, students will be evaluated on the basis of:
-attendance to and level of participation at lessons;
-conscienciousness of homework preparation;
-level of familiarity with the piano score;
-competence of performance at concerts and/or recitals;
-degree of relative individual improvement in collaborative skills throughout the course.

Course Policies and Rules

Students are responsible for providing the collaborative pianist with a clean and legible score.
Rehearsals to be attended by the instrument instructor should be arranged and agreed upon by both instructors in advance.
