Course Objective

This course aims to give advanced properties of algebraic notions that is covered in the course Basic Algebraic Structures .

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Groups together with cyclic groups and their whole basic structure should be known. 2   Factor groups, rings should be known. 3   Ideal concept, together with maximal and prime ideals should be known. 4   Extension fields and rings should be known. 5   Students should know more about groups, rings and fields that are covered in the course Basic Algebraic Structures .

Week Subject Description 1 Review of groups and introduction to cyclic groups. 2 Order of element, subgroups of cyclic groups. 3 Generating sets and examples. 4 Cosets and Lagrange theorem, direct product of groups. 5 Homomorphisms, normal subgroups, first isomorphism theorem and it s applications. Factor groups. 6 Factor group computations. 7 Isomorphism theorems on groups. 8 Review 9 Midterm 10 Field of quotients of an integral domain. 11 Rings and ideals, factor rings. 12 Maximal ideals, prime ideals, ideal structure on F(x). 13 Extension fields I 14 Extension Fields II
