Course Objective

The aim of this course is to familiarize the students with important themes within contemporary social political theory and the means in which they relate to the world in which we reside. This goal will be accomplished by surveying the most influential political theorists of our time.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   GaIn understanding of some of the most important themes in modern Western political theory and new perspectives on important contemporary political issues.
2   Gain experience in reading philosophical works that involve complex concepts and analysis.
3   Gain experience writing argumentative papers and enhance their critical thinking and writing skills.
4   Learn to articulate questions and ideas regarding philosophical subjects, and communicate these effectively with others.
5   Develop skills in analytical and critical thinking.

Assessment Criteria

1-The student will examine the selected portions of the works of the most influential contemporary scholars in political theory/philosophy such as Jürgen Habermas and Michel Foucault and Immanuel Wallerstein.
2- Students will define and shape contemporary politics: extremism, genocide, the nature of justice, proposals which aim to reshape democratic engagement and the political community, the operation of power in modern society,gender issues, and cultural difference, amongst others.
3- The students will demonstrate the ways in which political theory provides us with not only the foundations of our political system, but guidance in understanding, evaluating , and coping with on-going navigation of difference in deeply pluralistic and interdependent societies

3. Students are expected to read the assigned material prior to class and to participate in class discussions.
4. Students will make presentations on topics distributed by the instructor.
