Course Objective

Aim is to rewiev on absurd theater tendency of XX century, and politic theater and Brecht s epic theater apprehension emerged afterwards; and the created works will be evaluated for the century survey .

3   Understanding the epic theatre s philosophy in the sample plays surveyed with the knowledge mentioned,
4   Understanding the features of an epic theater piece,
5   Being informed about examples of Epic (non-imitating) and dialetic in Turkish theater

2 Epic Theater and Bertolt Brecht s Epic theater theory
3 Brecht s play: Señora Carrar's Rifles This must be the play to survey for the reason that it is the first text example to the change from Epic to dramatic, a very interesting one.
4 Brecht s play: Mother Courage and Her Children After discussion of the logic of war and commerce, Mother Carrar and Mother Courage are to be compared.
5 Brecht s play: The Good Person of Szechwan The Gods are looking for good person on earth.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

As the Learning And Teaching Strategy, first the concept of Politic Theater, and Piscator who wrote a refence book about the subject, and the successors Meyerhold ve Brecht s theater will be discussed. Then Epic theater theory s founder, writer, director and lecturer Bertolt Brecht and his works will be studied. Richness of the literature of Brecht, vast plays and the images will be enough to understand epic.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Class and exam attendance is required; as well as the presentation. Presentation groups of 2 or 3 people must be careful about materials, research, reaching the visual stuff, language in class presentation , reaching the sources, evaluating the critics/rewievs, pictures or DVD format material to enrich the presentation and debates brought to class finally.

Assessment Criteria

Normally, assesment criteria consists of attendance, participation, entering the exams, at the same time presentation in the classes, reading the plays, knowing the text well, dramaturgic survey,information in play structure, the era the writer lived and the other works written. Knowledge in differences between epic theater and dramatic one is the criteria.

Course Policies and Rules

Dersin policy is to distribute the epic theater theory, to show the style called open and non-imitative plays logic; to suggest the logic having dramatic moments but epic as a whole. The rule is structured onto both surveying of the epic texts and the students learning of the theory with the texts. Presentation, attendancei participation, critic point of wiev, attending to exams are the rules.
