Course Objective

The course aims to give basic training in the professional art environment that will be encountered in the process of making a career after studying art, such as how to establish professional communication and enter into dialogue with those in that environment, and to teach basic concepts, methods, and techniques relating to the lay-out of a portfolio containing visual materials to be used in the aforementioned communication.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, the student will: Be able to develop awareness of themselves as a trainee artist, and be able to present themselves and their works to a group audience by using supporting visual data.
2   Develop the skills to write an Artist s Statement which explains, in their own words, their understanding of art, which they believe and can defend, the conceptual background to their works, and their stylistic characteristics.
3   Develop the skills to establish professional communication with the people that they will encounter throughout their career, such as curators, gallery directors, and critics.
4   Acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become accustomed to archiving by selecting, classifying, defining, and photographing the works they produce.
5   Learn the techniques for preparing portfolios, and acquire a basic level of graphic design knowledge in the process of designing their portfolio.
6   Acquire the skills for writing captions, biographies, and other texts as part of the written content of a portfolio.
7   Acquire the skills for keeping the portfolio they have prepared up to date and to be able to adapt it in different ways according to changing requirements.
8   Learn the methods for transforming the traditional portfolio into digital formats, and is expected to be able to transfer it onto internet sites and social media sites.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is divided into two parts: theory and practice.
In the theory section, the subject of that week will be covered by looking at examples supported by visual materials. During this time, students will make notes and take part in discussions with questions and answer sessions.
Within the course, students will be presented with example works of a professional artist, and in question and answer sessions, the artist will share their experiences. Students, as trainee professional artists, will be expected to make a similar presentation.
In the practice section, students will be expected to apply the theoretical knowledge they have learned by way of a project set for them by the teacher. During this time, the student will be supported by the teacher using past samples.

Assessment Criteria

PROJECT: The criteria that will determine the grade scale of the assessment are based on the artistic qualities of the practical projects they hand in (such as content, compositional conventions, principle of design, etc.), the proficiency in the application of technique, accuracy in the presentation, the planned and effective use of time, the project s being handed in on time, and the frequency of advice-seeking from the teacher during the practical application process.

1. Attendance of 80% of the course is mandatory.
2. Projects that are not handed in on the determined date will not be assessed.
