Course Objective

Character, as a basic element of narrative, is a very important concept to understand. The lesson aims at understanding historically and socially the emergence and development of character , and how it was transformed in different narrative structures and social structures. Creating a character as the bearer of action in a narrative is one of the most important stage of grasping the reality and creating an effective narrative. Therefore, the lesson aims at teaching what character is, how it emerged, developed and was transformed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to understand the emergence of character in the structure of a narrative
2   to learn the phases of character through historical and social development and to forge links between social structure and examples of characters
3   to understand differences in creating a character in different genres and narrative structures
4   to be able to make character analysis for films and thus to enrich film critique
5   to be able to draw upon the character creation experience and accumulation of the history of art as a part of the student s own productions
