Course Objective

To assess all textiles within designing and production from ancient times through Industrial Revolution to present time.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Analysis of transformation from functionality to decoration in patterns
2   Interpretation of effects of patterned textiles on textile market
3   Correlation of textile patterns with new discoveries and comments on related issues
4   Assessment of effects of today s industry on textile patterns and interpretation of its similarities to and differences from past.

1 Textiles from antiquity until 1550 s Coptic tapestries and Egyptian Christian textiles
2 Tradition of Italian (Norman and Renaisence) and English needle works
3 Textile trade in New age, cotton and wool luxury fabric production in England and France
4 Textile designing related to upholstery fabrics, beds and interiors
5 Trade with Orient and technical developments
6 Innovative and creative inventions and discoveries thanks to Industrial Revolution
7 Print patterned cottons, development of printing and new machinery techniques and their influences
8 Midterm Exam
9 Mentality of Arts and Crafts related textiles and patterns
10 Approaches of designers and artists to textile and patterns in late 19th and early 20 centuries
11 Relationships between art, industry and modernism from 1851 Great Exhibition to 1925 Paris International
