Course Objective

The aim of this course is inform the students about the history of the art emerged in Anatolia after the acceptance of Islam, and to discuss the concept of Traditional Turkish Arts in historical and today's context, and to assess artistic works related to it.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   After the education given by this course, students are supposed to be informed of the art history researches, and how and to which extent they began as a discipline; and the studies of the Eastern arts, and when and under which conditions they are done,
2   know the history of artistic works belonging to the East after the acceptance of Islam; and have the knowledge about the Islamic Art,
3   be informed of the periods and styles in which Turkish crafts emerged in history, and know them,
4   be informed of the palace arts including book art, palace carpets and cloth, tile works in architecture and every day use during Seljuk and Ottoman period,
5   know the art fields included in Traditional Turkish Crafts in its historical development and in accordance with the techniques and materials
6   assess the art works of today and use the training they have got for the works correctly and efficiently,
7   present the theoretical traditional art concept by their original designs effectively

4 The definition, emerge and use of the Islamic Art
5 Ideas on the Islamic Art and discussions
6 Painting ban in Islam, the historical phases of view of depiction after Islam
7 Today s Islam artists Modern Middle East artists exhibition (British Museum)
8 The post of Turkish Art, geographical borders and nomadic life in Islam Art
9 The chronological and cognitive outlines of Turkish Art; Turkish Art concept in Medieval Anatolia

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In this course, when and to what extent the Oriental arts take place in the researches and literature of art history; the scope of today s and recent history's studies related to Oriental arts will be introduced. These studies will primarily be related to Islamic arts and Turkish arts . The stylistic features of Turkish Arts after Islam, and the mentality of the period, and visual presentations will be given in chronological order. The domestic and overseas museums, libraries and private collections related to the Turkish Arts will be introduced, and the students will be informed of the research techniques in these organizations.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

In this course, in which theoretical information is given and the related visual presentations are made by the instructor, attendance is important. The students will be observed in terms of their answers to the questions in the lessons and their participation in the discussions at the end of each lesson. The student s theoretical and visual references which he will prepare throughout the educational term will also be taken into consideration.

Assessment Criteria

The mid-term and the final exams are evaluated out of 100. 70% attendance is compulsory.

After the theoretical information is conveyed to the students both orally and written, lecture notes are given to them. 80% attendance is compulsory. The students are informed of the following lesson and are expected to read something related to the subject.
