Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the students what kind of materials the traditional carpets and plain weavings have been made of, by which technique and by which loom; to have them weave by using carpet, rug and plain weavings techniques, and have them gain problem solving ability for possible problems in the course of design, theory and application, and have them make original designs.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   classify traditional carpets and plain weavings in accordance with weaving techniques,
2   develop original designs within the scope of a selected subject,
3   turn on carpet weaving loom,
4   program preparations before weaving process,
5   apply traditional carpet and plain weaving techniques,
6   convert their designs into products,
7   present the products effectively.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Raw materials used for carpet, rug and plain weavings; thread making and dying process; determining the subject to be designed
2 Types of looms used for weavings, their introduction, slide presentation and starting sketches for designs
3 Information about preparations before weaving and going on with sketches
4 Explaining fringe, çiti, dressing, rug knitting, knot techniques; evaluating sketches and making colour variations of the selected sketches
5 Explaining buttoned rug weaving technique, colouring the designs
6 Instructing the technique of rug woven on a hand loom, drawing the warps, preparing the looms for weaving
7 Instructing Zili weaving technique and completing preparations for weaving
8 Instructing Sumak weaving technique, starting weaving process
9 Going on with weaving
10 Going on with weaving

In this course, the lecturer s notes and resource researches will be used. Application works will be realized in the workshop under the supervision of the lecturer.

Evaluation criteria is made up of the students researches on the subject, project preparation and presentation and their success at design works.

Assessment Criteria

The students projects and assignments will be evaluated out of 100. Attendance will be effective on the pass grade by 20 %.

Course Policies and Rules

80 % attendance is compulsory. Workshop studies are nominal. Especially, designs and applications have to be completed in a lesson s time.
