Course Objective

The main purpose of the course is to provide the student with essential information on economic, political and institutional structures of Europe. For this purpose, besides historical background, development of institutional structures and evolution of international business environment in this region will also be assessed throughout this course.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to explain the economic, political and institutional structure of the EU, to make use of this information both in other related courses and in his/her future business carrier.
2   Be able to analyse and interpret the evolution of the European integration to make inferences for the international business environment.
3   Be able to distinguish between different economic and political patterns and business traditions in the major European countries, to assess their implications for doing business with these countries.

Assessment Criteria

1. The learner will explain the economic, political and institutional features of the EU, to make use of this information both in other related courses and in his/her future business carrier.
2. The learner will recognize the way EU has evolved from its establishment onwards, and make inferences on the implications of this evolution for the changing business environment.
3. The learner will demonstrate the differences among member countries of the EU, in terms of their economic and political structure, in order to assess their implications for doing business with these countries.

Course Policies and Rules

1. Attending at least 70 % of lectures is mandatory.
2. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
3. Although the course is mainly based on lectures, around 20 % of each session is intended for class discussion, based on the lecture itself and assigned readings. Therefore, students are expected to be prepared for class participation at each session.
