Course Objective

This course aims to deal with what translation criticism is and how it is done and develop awareness on translation criticism based on theoretical readings rather than seeking mistakes and a prescriptive approach, through critical analysis of texts translated from German into Turkish.

3   To become aware of the responsibility to understand the translated work with all the mistakes in the target language,
4   To use the basic concepts and methods of translation criticism,

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. Courses
The students translate the texts in German at home first. This course aims to deal with what translation criticism is and how it is done and develop awareness on translation criticism based on theoretical readings rather than seeking mistakes and a prescriptive approach, through critical analysis of texts translated from German into Turkish.
2. Review Sessions and Classroom Discussions
Works on translation, translation criticism tradition in Turkey, research and papers of academics on translation.

Assessment Criteria

1. In the mid-term, the students will be asked a question on a part of a work which was not worked on in class, but was written by an author read and discussed in class. 40% of the mid-term will be taken into account in the assesment.
2. In the final exam, the students will be asked to indicate their ideas in practice on methods, skills and evaluation criteria that they learnt in this course. 40% of the final exam will be taken into account in the assesment.
3. Participation of the student will be taken into account (20%).

1. Attendance (70%) is obligatory.
2. Absence will not be regarded as a rationale for late submission of assignments.
