Course Objective

This course explores the public nature of private violence, spesicifically violence against women, LGBTQI people. Students will investigate the social, political and personal meaning of violence within gendered context. Throughout the course students will analyze the ways in which philosophical, social, cultural, economic and political factors teach us to think about discrimination on women and LGBTQI people. In result of that analysis, students will also examine the social phenomena such as race, ethnicity and class affect the degree and type of violence against women, LGBTQI people and all the disadvantaged groups in Turkey as well as in the world.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Analyzing the social and personal significance of gender in contemporary life by way of diverse philosophical perspectives,
2   Understanding the key concepts in gender theory in relation to the acts of violence,
3   Being aware of the relations between violence and sexism,
4   Speaking and writing skillfully about gender issues,
5   Making a discussion on discrimation in the society against women, LGBTQI people,
6   Being aware of some phenomena which causes violence such as racism, ethnicity etc. and discovering their relations with sexism.

8 Discussion on discrimation in the society against women, LGBTQI people.
9 Discussion on discrimation in the society against women, LGBTQI people.
10 Racism and gender-based violence
11 Ethnicity, culture and gender-based violence
12 Sexism,power, discrimination and gender-based violence
13 Sexual assaults, power and hierarchical relations in the society.
