Course Objective

The objective of this course is to make an introduction to the area of Linguistics, draw attention to the relation of Linguistics with other disciplines, present information about the functions of language and the subareas of Linguistics.

2   Explain the relation between and make a comparison between linguistics and other disciplines
3   Explain phonetics and phonology by making comparisons
4   Explain morphology with its areas of investigation
5   Explain syntax with its areas of investigation

Week Subject Description
1 What is Linguistics Definition and Methodological Principles of Linguistics. Foundation adn Developmemnt of Linguistics. Post-Saussurean Linguistics.
2 Synchronic (Descriptive) and Diachronic (Histroical) Linguistics. General and Specific Linguistics. Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.
3 Relation between linguistics and other disciplines of research: Literature, Psychology, Logic, Philosophy, Anthropology, Geography
4 Relation between linguistics and other disciplines of research: Physiology, Biophysics, Cognition, Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Processing.
5 Relation between linguistics and other disciplines of research: Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Sciences, Physics, Cybernetics, Technology
6 Language and Thought, Language and the Mind. The semiological content of language.
7 Language and Society, Linguistic Societies, Language Varieties.
8 Midterm
9 Branches of Linguistics: Phonetics: Definition, areas of application and sub-branches Phonology: Definition, areas of application and sub- branches
10 Syntax: Definitions, approaches and theories in syntax
