Course Objective

The objective of this course is to improve awareness on the relation between language and culture making use of the related theories and approaches such as Sapir-Whorfian Hypothesis, speech-acts, ethnography of communication; and concepts which demonstrate different characteristics in different languages and cultures such as kinship terms, colour terms, metonomy, metaphor, gender related linguistic features, and discourse patterns..

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   the student is expected to able to define the basic concepts related to Language and Culture (Ethnolinguistics)
2   the student is expected to able to explain the relation between Language and Culture
3   the student is expected to able to prepare the outline of an enthnomethodological research.
4   the student is expected to able to compare and contrast the difference between different languages and cultures in terms of specific ethnolinguistic concepts.
5   the student is expected to able to evaluate and criticize a study on the relation between language and culture.
6   the student is expected to able to draw conclusions judging from findings on the relation between language and culture.

2 Meaning as a sign: meanings of signs, cultural encodings, non-arbitrary nature of signs
3 Meaning as action: context of situation, context of culture, expectation structures
4 Culture and linguistic categories: kinship terms, color terms, metonomy
5 Culture and linguistic categories: folk taxonomies, taboo and euphemism
6 Language and cultural identity: cultural identity, cultural stereotyping
7 Pragmatic coherence, cooperation principle, roles of participants, and construction of
8 Mid-term exam
9 Verbal language, verbal culture: theories of face and politeness
10 Functions of speech: politeness and address terms
11 The relation between gender and politeness
12 Varieties of talk: ethnography of speaking, ethnomethodology
13 Theory of speech-acts
