Course Objective

The objective of the course is to enable the student to realise that a sign needs to be interpreted and used in the context of paradigm. Thus, it will be demonstrated that signs are assigned meanings based on other signs in the paradigm, and paradigms are assigned meanings based on other paradigms, to draw attention to the fact that the sign is a dynamic entity.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To define in detail the sign and the object of research in semiotics
2   To define social institution, its paradigms and interrelational networks
3   To associate signs represented in a paradigm and to explain their arbitrarity
4   To demonstrate that in a paradigm the meaning which a sign can be assigned to differs depending on other signs in the paradigm
5   To demonstrate that each paradigm to which a meaning can be assigned to differs depending on other paradigms
6   To gain knowledge on the methods of creating paradigms and to demonstrate how these can be used
7   To analyse and interpret different signs
