Course Objective

The objective of this course is to enable students to read texts from different disciplines and analyze these texts critically.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students are expected to be able to explain the characteristics of academic writing and use these characteristics in textual analysis
2   identify the parts of different types of articles and grasp the functions of these parts
3   take notes from the text and use these notes in critical evaluation of the text.
4   determine the author s purpose and follow the flow of thought throughout the text
5   evaluate the unity of the text and find the points that disturb unity
6   use his/her knowledge in making textual analysis during academic studies and follow the literature

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. 1. Lectures: Lectures are designed in a way that students will grasp the points to be paid attention to during reading. After necessary information is given in class, it is assured through in-class readings that students can use their knowledge in practice.
2. 2. Discussion: It is an indispensable part of the course in terms of its creating an environment where students share their answers and their views about these answers
3. 3. Student Presentations: These presentations where students share their analysis on a text they choose have great importance in terms of their discussing different perspectives
4. 4. Paper: It allows to observe how students turn their analysis they share in the students presentations into an academic essay.
5. 5. Midterm Examination: It is used in evaluating students performance in the first half of the term
6. 6. Final Examination: It is used in evaluating students performance throughout the term
