Course Objective

The objective of this course is to have the students discover the relation between language and gender, question the stereotypical gender roles expressed and maintained through language and improve their awareness on how gender is encoded in language morphologically, semantically and/or pragmatically.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   the student is expected to be able to indicate the difference between language and culture
2   the student is expected to be able to explain how gender is constructed in language with examples
3   the student is expected to be able to discuss the relation between language and gender roles
4   the student is expected to be able to identify stereotypical gender roles in visual and written texts
5   the student is expected to be able to question the relation between society-language-gender
6   the student is expected to be able to specify the basic concepts required in order to explain the relation between language and gender
