Course Objective

To provide the fundamentals for safety and risk in the contxt of maritime administration. To explain the background and to clarify the terms and definitions involved in maritime risk management. To apply the theoretical background related to safety and risk in relation to governmental tasks like maritime accident investigation and maritime search and rescue (SAR).

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand the concepts and context of different definitions for risk and safety
2   To realize the importance of maritime casualty investigations for the definition of maritime safety and marine environmental protection standards
3   Getting knowledge on commonly used risk assessment methodologies in the maritime sector
4   To know links between different scientific disciplines supporting risk management in general
5   Having knowledge about the principles of the maritime casualty investigation process and the related reporting
