Course Objective

1. To conduct hydraulic design of treatment plants
2. To develop hydraulic profile and calculate relative and absolute elevations of the units with respect to each other and the ground level

1   To use hydraulic knowledge in treatment plant (TP) design
2   To calculate water elevations between the treatment units
3   To calculate the elevations of walls, basements and excavation
4   To apply (insert) TP wrt ground elevation
5   To develop hydraulic profile

Course Contents

1 The importance of hydraulic design and its application to treatment plants
2 Principal expressions (equations) - Bernoulli and continuity; conceptual evaluation
3 Measurement of hyraulic parameters (pressure, flow, etc)
4 Energy and energy losses in hydraulic design - General information
5 Losses in hydraulic design - frictional losses
6 Losses in hydraulic design - local losses
7 Design of water conveyance elements pipes and conduits for a Typical Treatment Plant Example (TTPE)
8 Determination of elevetions of water, walls, basements, excations in TTPE.
9 Hydraulic design of splitter, determination of elevations (water, walls, basements, weirs) in TTPE
10 Hydraulic design of inlet and outlet structures in TTPE and introduction of the "recovery of velocity head" concept
11 Midterm exam
12 Development of hydraulic profile of the TTPE, drawing of pressure and energy lines
13 Presentation and discussion of homeworks in the class
14 Vertical application concept of TP and general evaluation
