Course Objective

The course objective is to give an ability to design treatment plant required for the wastewater generated from the manufacturing processes of industrial plants.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To analyze any manufacturing process and determine the wastewater sources
2   To produce alternative flowschemes appropriate for both process wastewater and domestic wastewater
3   To calculate the dimensions of treatment units
4   To calculate the capacity of mechanic equipment and chose appropriate ones
5   To draw plan and cross-section views of units
6   To draw general layout of the treatment plant

Course Contents

1 General description of the project; Grouping; Determination of sectors studied and distribution of the project data to the groups
2 Drawing of treatment plant flow schemes
3 Designing of equalization tank (dimensions, mechanic equipment selection and placement, plan and cross-view drawings)
4 Designing of floatation tank (dimensions, mechanic equipment such as skimming, aeration selection and placement, plan and cross-view drawings)
5 Designing of neutralization tank (dimensions, acid/base dosing system, plan and cross-view drawings)
6 Designing of coagulation tank (dimensions, mixing equipment selection and replacement, plan and cross-view drawings)
7 Midterm exam
8 Designing of flocculation tank (dimensions, mixing equipment selection and replacement, plan and cross-view drawings)
9 Designing of biological treatment unit, i.e. activated sludge unit (dimensions, selection of the aeration equipment and replacement, plan and cross-view drawings)
10 Designing of biological treatment unit, i.e. activated sludge unit (dimensions, selection of the aeration equipment and replacement, plan and cross-view drawings)
11 Designing of biological treatment unit; i.e. sequentially batch activated sludge unit (dimensions, selection of the aeration equipment and replacement, plan and cross-view drawings)

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lecture presentations will be achieved, length of the discharge pipe and its location and the replacement of the concrete weights will be controlled at project meetings, and technical guidance will be done.
