Course Objective

The course objective is to teach design principles of the unit operation/processes used for drinking water treatment, to design the treatment units. In addition, to provide information on current legislation and standards related to the drinking water is intended.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the unit operation and processes used in water treatment
2   Determine the quality parameters that can be used as drinking water sources
3   Select appropriate treatment methods considering to water quality parameters and standards
4   Calculate the dimensions of drinking water treatment units
5   To be able to draw draft drawings of the treatment units

1 Introducing the water resources
2 Introducing the water quality parameters and standard, and legislation
3 Introducing the unit operation and processed used in drinking water treatment
4 Water intake structures (intake from surface water and reservoirs, and springs)
5 Design principles of mechanic treatment units (sieve and microsieve) used in drinking water treatment
6 Aeration methods used in water treatment, design principles of cascades
7 Design principles of settling tanks used in drinking water treatment, and structural details of sedimentation basins
8 Midterm exam
9 Design principles of coagulation and flocculation units used in drinking water treatment, chemicals and dosing systems
10 Design principles of rapid sand filters and its operation
11 Design principles of slow sand filters and its operation
12 Disinfection methods and design principles of disinfection systems
13 Midterm exam
14 Advanced Treatment Methods
