Course Objective

To gain advanced knowledge on the principles and methodology of the hadith.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To comprehend the Prophet s legislative place and authority in Islam, as well as necessity of Sunnah and Hadith beside the Holy Quran,
2   Increasing the level of information about traditional objections to the hadith of the Orientalists and their scientific value and reasons behind their criticism,
3   Learning about the main issues in the old and new methodological hadith works,
4   Improving the text -solving skills by reading at least one of books written in Arabic-Turkish on field,
5   To gain enough knowledge and experience about the books of Hadith methodology, terminology, most famous narrators and authors in this field.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The emergence and development of the science of "Methodology of Hadith", famous books written in this field.
2 The parts of the Khabar (Hadith) in terms of reaching us: Mutewatir and Ahad (Masyhur, Aziz, Gharib)
3 Ahad's kinds in terms of strength and weakness: Acceptable khabers (hadiths): Sahih and Hasan
4 Not acceptable khabers (hadiths): Weak Hadith and its types: Muallaq, Mursal, Mu'dal, Munqatı', Mudellas, Muan'an ve Muen'en
5 Mawdu, Matrook, Munkar, Ma'roof, Mu'allal, Mudrac, Maqlub, Mudtarib, Musahhaf, Shazz
6 Qudsi, Marfu, Maukuf, Maqtu
7 al-I'tibar, Mutabi', Shahid
8 Jarh and Ta'deel (criticism and praise) ranks
9 The books written on Jarh and Ta'deel
10 The issues regarding to Isnad: 'Ali and Nazil, Musalsal, Mudabbac, Sabiq and Lahiq
11 Knowing narrators: Sahaba (Companions), Tabieen, Muttafiq-Muftariq, Mu'talif-Mukhtalif, Mutashabih, Muhmal, Mubham
12 Narrators cited with different names and adjectives, Titles and nicknames (laqabs and kunyas) of them, History of narrators, Categories of narrators
13 The methods of tahammul and ada' (reception and transmission) of hadits (riwayah)

The exams are in written form (classical or testing); semester work (homework) is in the form of verbal lecture.

Assessment Criteria

Written exams (midterm and final) and the points obtained over 100 in the semester are collected by calculating on certain percentages.

Attendance and to fulfill assignments and tasks carefully and on time is essential. Students will be able to express themselves and to make the team working and will be continuous liaison wtih books in their field, will improve the ability of using technical and technological means, especially the Internet.
