Course Objective

The aim of this course is to gain information for students on the topics of epistemology, methodology, the classification of sciences, ethics, politics in Islamic philosophy from the wake of Islamic Philosophy to the 15.th century.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The attendant will know the reasons for the raising of philosophy in Islam
2   The attendant will explicate the classical philosophical sciences
3   The attendant will comprehend basic processes of Islamic philosophy and its problems
4   The attendant will recognize the approaches of schools of Classical Islamic Philosophy towards the problems of Islamic Philosophy.
5   The attendant will know and relate the critiques on the contents and methodologies of philosophical sciences
6   The attendant will improve the reasoning on the effects of philosophical arguments on the history of science and culture in Islam.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The sources of Islamic Philosophy: Ancient Sumerian, Babylon, Egypt, Indian traditions. The essence of knowledge whic h was culminated from Greek Sources
2 Various dimensions of Quran and Sunna which induces Science and Philosophy
3 The evaluation of Philosophical Schools of Islam from epistemological, ontological and practical point of views
4 Systematical topics of philosophy,logic, Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, Metaphysics, Practical Philosophy ( Ethics and Politics)
5 The problems derives from logic as a method of philosophical sciences and its relation with language; the problem of universality of logic
6 The epistemological problems of historical knowledge from the point of view of Peripatetic School.
7 The arguments and problems about the place of social sciences in the classification of philosophical sciences
8 Mid-term Exam
9 The problems derives from the relation between philosophy and religion drom the point of view of cosmology and metaphysics.
10 The problems between practical philosophy , ethics and political philosophy
11 Critiques toward Islamic Philosophy: Tahafut of Gazali and Ibn Rushd
12 The critique of classical philosophy in light of different history of philosophy and metaphysics of Ishraki School
13 Ibn Taymiyya and his critique of logic
14 Ibn Haldun and his critique of classical philosophy from the point of viev of social sciences
