Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the students the opportunities provided by Ottoman sources for the history of children.

1   To be able to recognize Ottoman sources
2   To be able to explain the place of children in the Ottoman sources
3   To be able to use Ottoman sources in the history of childhood
4   To able to summarize the importance of court registers in the history of childhood
5   To be able to write the importance of fatwa collections in the history of childhood

1 The Ottoman sources: the opportunities they provides for the history of children and childhood
2 Children in 19th century sources: documents related to the marriage age
3 Children in 19th century sources: documents related to the famines and their effect on children
4 Children in 19th century sources: documents related to the street children, "reform" of the children and child labor
5 Children in 19th century sources: documents related to education of girls
6 Children in manuscripts: stories related to boys and girls
7 Children in manuscripts: relationship between parents and children
8 Mid-term
9 Children in fatwa collections: fatwas related to the wet-nurses
10 Children in fatwa collections: fatwas related to motherhood and fatherhood
11 Children in fatwa collections: fatwas related to the transition from childhood to adulthood
12 Children in court registers: records related to child mortality
13 Children in court registers: records related to street, neighborhood and the children
14 Children in court registers: records related to children from Anatolia in Istanbul
