Course Objective

This course aims to enable students to know about features of literary texts. During this course the major theories of text analysis are introduced. Students are informed about the method of semiotic text analysis and thanks to this information, they can analyse literary texts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   being able to analyse semiotic texts and learning about text types and features of literary texts.
2   Being able to analyse literary texts from different perspectives.
3   Preparing some application activities for foreign language classes.
4   being able to know about basic features of literary texts and to apprehend basic skills in analysis related to these texts.
5   becoming more sensitive to the texts by different approaches to the texts in books.
6   being able to use literary texts in French teaching.

Course Contents

1 Sign, definition of semiotics and explanations.
2 Historical process. Basic approaches C.S. Pierce. Sign understanding of Pierce. Sign and object, sign and itself.
3 Sign and its explicator. The icon, the iconic sign
4 Approaches originating from Europe, F. de Saussure and semiotics
5 Prague School of Linguistics, Copenhagen School of Linguistics. Folklore, Ethnology, anthropology and semiotics. Vladimir Propp and the analysis of narrative function. The implementation of Propp's approach in Turkish folk narratives.
6 Cultural anthropology, Claude Levi-Strauss and structuralism. Semiotics of meaning and Roland Barthes
7 A-J. Greimas and the Paris School of Semiotics. Approaches, differences, similarities.
8 Examples of semiotic analysis and applications
9 Mid-term exam
10 Descriptive level, narrative level and the thematic level
11 Use of semiotic text analysis in teaching narrative texts.
12 Descriptive level and text analysis.
13 Different assessments about features of narrative texts in French text books.
14 Application examples of student works
