Course Objective

Identifying Turkish vocabulary and its richness, and through oral and written Turkish documents, showing the vocabulary and possibilities of expressions and developing the methods of vocabulary teaching in teaching a foreign language

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to describe Turkish vocabulary and use it effectively.
2   Ability to identify and describe universal feature of vocabulary
3   Ability to use vocabulary teaching methods for teaching Turkish as a foreign language.
4   Ability to follow and comment theoretical and practical studies about lexicology, and suggest proposals about new studies.
5   Ability to follow and comment theoretical and practical studies about semantics, and suggest proposals about new studies.

1 What are word, lexical items, lexeme, dictionary, and lexicology
2 Kinds of dictionaries and word formulation, different kinds of words in a language
3 Dictionary and meaning. Linguistic referent, meaning and sign
4 Approaches on definition of words: extension and sense, superordinate and hyponymy
5 Denotation, connotation, metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche
6 Semantically analysis of words, seme, sememe
7 The analysis of seme and componential analysis, Definition and the kinds of definitions. Prototype and stereotype
8 Midterm Exam
9 Different approaches on definitions.
10 Synonyms, homophones, homographs
11 Antonyms
12 Paronym
13 Turkish semantic features
14 Synonymy and Turkish
15 Final Exam
