Course Objective

The course objective is to add more advance skill to students who have been introduced to basic skills in Consecutive Interpreting I and make sure that they reach a level of performing the interpreting practice without difficulty by doing as many exercises possible.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Improve consecutive interpreting techniques with practice.
2   Evaluate an interpreter and interpreting practice objectively.
3   Use body language efficiently.
4   Speak both German and Turkish with the proper tone of voice and intonation.
5   Do preliminary research and terminology work for consecutive interpreting.

1 Reviewing the skills and principles learned in the Consecutive Interpreting I
2 Class exercise. Topic: EU-Turkey Students will prepare for the resources of the topic.
3 Class exercise. Topic: Law 1 Students will prepare for the resources of the topic.
4 Class exercise. Topic: Law 2 Students will prepare for the resources of the topic.
5 Class exercise: Interviews Students will prepare for the resources of the topic.
6 Class exercise. Topic: Medicine 1 Students will prepare for the resources of the topic.
7 Class exercise. Topic: Medicine 2 Students will prepare for the resources of the topic.
8 Mid-term exam
9 Class exercise. Topic: Foreign politics Students will prepare for the resources of the topic.
10 Class exercise. Topic: Engineering Students will prepare for the resources of the topic.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Exams
Throughout the semester two exams will be given:
Midterm (%20)
Final exam (%20)
Both are oral exams in which students will be asked to interpret a speech consecutively.
2. Homework and participation
Students will be graded separately for each class. The text, presentation or the title of the topic of the week will be given before each class and students will be asked to attend the class fully prepared. In each class students are expected to participate in the activities and contribute to the class with their preparation.
3. Presentation
Students will prepare one presentation throughout the semester by role-playing a speech and its interpreting as pairs

Assessment Criteria

1. The attendance grade will be based on (i) the student s participation in the class, (ii) the quality of the answers given by the student to questions asked by the instructor and (iii) the student s contribution to creating a positive learning environment.
2. For grades on the border between two grades, active participation in the class will justify the higher grade.

1. Attendance is compulsory.
2. Students are required to come to the class prepared.
3. Non-attendance will not be considered as an excuse for late submission of homework.
4. Students are required to provide their own CDs and voice recorder to the class.
