Course Objective

The course objective is to have students to acquire the basic knowledge and skills required in the translation of literary works from German to Turkish. Students will be informed about the challenges created by culture-specific concepts and vocabulary in literary translation and also about the possibilities that literary translation offers to translators. It is aimed to inform students on the various methods and strategies used in different genres such as novel, short story, poetry, theatre and children s literature and to have them get experienced in translation of passages in such genres. Besides, students will gain experience in preliminary research in order to learn the historical context necessary in the process of literary translation and in thinking ahead of the translation of the methods they will use and different solutions to potential problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students observe the different translation methods and the way language is perceived in different translation by studying prominent examples of German literature in comparison with their various translations in Turkish.
2   It will be underlined that what matters in translation is translator s strategies by adopting an understanding that the translator can translate as far as s/he comprehends and interprets.
3   They gain awareness that literary translation is the kind of translation that requires cultural background more than other kinds do.
4   They understand that a literary translator acts as a cultural ambassador.
5   They gain awareness that knowledge on cultures is imperative in order to be able to do literary translation.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. Classes
In the class, students will be shown that while literary translation is actually an act of cultural transfer and that cultural backgrounds in the source and target languages do not overlap with each other and by which strategies this lack of overlap can be overcome through practice.

1. Exams
Two exams will be given throughout the semester..
Mid-term exam (% ) 40

Exams will assess the students skills of comprehension and interpretation of the works that they have read.

2. Homework and Participation: (%) 20

Students will bring to the class their homework. Students preparation is compulsory for their success in the class. Homework is crucial also to prepare students for the exams

Assessment Criteria

1. In the mid-term exam, a part of an author s work that has been studied during those weeks, of which translations have been discussed and that is not particularly dealt with in the class is asked. In the assessment, 40% of the mid-term exam will be taken into consideration
2. In the final exam students are asked to show their views on the methods, skills and assessment criteria they have learned in the class in an applied fashion. At the end of the semester, 40% of the final exam will be taken into consideration.
3. Students participation in the class will compose of 20 % of his total mark.

1. % 70 Attendance is compulsory.
2. Non-attendance will not be considered as an excuse for late submission of homework.
3. Active participation in the class will be important in the grading assessment of the student.
