Course Objective

This course aims to teach the skills of text analysis for the purpose of translation and enhancing translation skills from Turkish to German.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have a command of text types and text traditions.
2   Can make text analysis of Turkish texts for translation
3   Can analyse German translations of Turkish texts and detect translation strategies
4   Improves the skills of translation from Turkish to German

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 What is text analysis for translation
2 Text types and functions
3 Relation between the text type and text analysis for translation
4 Translation of advertisements and propaganda texts Turkish advertisement and propaganda texts as examples of connotative texts will be analysed and translated into German. Then translations will be compared and evaluated.
5 News translation News texts as examples of informative texts will be analysed and translated into German. Then translations will be compared and evaluated.
6 Student Presentations Students will make presentations in the light of previous lecture and examples.
7 Midterm
8 Translation of proverbs, idioms, and aphorisms An intorduction to translation and analysis of proverbs, idioms, and aphorisms.
9 Short story translation Analysis and comparision of translations of Sait Faik Abasıyanık, Pınar Kür, and Tomris Uyar's short stories
10 Satire translation Translation based text analysis and comparison of translations from Aziz Nesin's humour texts.
11 Student Presentations Students will make presentations in the light of previous lecture and examples.
12 Novel translation Translation based text analysis will be made on Yaşar Kemal and Sbahattin Ali's novels.
13 Student Presentations Students will make presentations in the light of previous lecture and examples.
