Course Objective

The course objective is to equip students with beginner level skills for simultaneous interpreting, to familiarize them with work in the booth and to bring them up to a level of interpreting simple speeches simultaneously from English to Turkish.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   They acquire knowledge regarding interpreting.
2   They can do preliminary preparation and research necessary before the interpreting practice for conferences on various topics.
3   They can tackle difficulties that may arise during simultaneous interpreting with skills and knowledge they have acquired.
4   They can act in a professional manner in the booth.
5   They acquire general knowledge about issues frequently encountered in interpreting.

1 Introduction to simultaneous interpreting. The knowledge and skills an interpreter should have. Using equipment.
2 Booth manner and relations with clients, professional ethics memory exercises
3 Introducing international and national interpreting organizations Number exercises
4 Simultaneous interpreting techniques. Building semantic units. Reformulation. Simplification, omission, anticipation. Explicitation.
5 Interpreting short and simple sentences. Speech videos for practice. Transcription exercises

Assessment Criteria

1. Oral tests that are recorded will be evaluated in terms of preparation, use of skills learned during the semester and fulfilling the tasks required.
2. The attendance grade will be based on (i) the student s participation in the class, (ii) the quality of the answers given by the student to questions asked by the instructor and (iii) the student s contribution to creating a positive learning environment.
3. For grades on the border between two grades, active participation in the class will justify the higher grade.
